I think the context refers not to the outcoming of humanity but to its evolution, to its continuous change as time passes. The uncertainty lies in that movement.
That´s how I see it. Just an idea.

the becoming

becoming is the translation always used for devenir. I teach philosophy at university level in the UK and that is the way in which is and has always been translated, when it is intended to have a philosophical sense.
