I think in this context the term 'historic data' or 'historical data' is what is meant. The ref gives a good example of such usage. Such a file might well be called the 'HISTORY' file, but the file contents would be better called 'historical data'.
So I would translate the last part of this sentence '. . . in version 1.2, historical data is stored in a text file'. To my mind, it would sound a bit odd to say '. . .in version 1.2, the history is stored in a text file.'
