I haven't come across 'en tanto' in this context before. Is it used correctly here? Is it possible that the word 'tanto' in this sentence isn't supposed to be here?
Any contributions appreciated, thanks!
'las identidades dominantes se desarticulan en tanto totalidades inteligibles'
academic article, Chile.
I'm not able to provide more context for confidentiality, but essentially this phrase happily stands alone for this purpose.

Se trata de un uso bastante común calcado del francés:
En tanto
7.3. Seguida de sustantivo, se usa como locución preposicional con el sentido de 'en calidad de, considerado como', calco rechazable del francés: ⊗«En tanto que americanos, nos gusta la gratificación instantánea» (Vanguardia [Esp.] 17.6.1994); debió decirse en cuanto americanos o como americanos.

Esta sería la estructura de la traducción (con independencia de la terminolgía):
"the dominant identities are separated as intelligible wholes"

Coincido también con la propuesta de Andy.

: @Helena: You don't say !( though relatively lucid judged solely by his standards) Yes, it's a calque of " en tant que" from French meaning ' as', ' insofar as', in terms of a function.

Creo que el autor del texto quiso decir "de acuerdo a ".....Pero prefirió utilizar "en tanto", a manera de sinónimo.
I think the author of the text meant "according to"..... But he preferred to use "as much as" , as a synonym.

: How did you reach that conclusion? And how can you be so confident? "En tanto" ("mientras que") is not a synonym of "de acuerdo a", nor does it mean "as much as".

las identidades dominantes se desarticulan en tanto totalidades inteligibles
paraphrasing the ST:
---> (+/-)
las identidades dominantes, fundadas sobre un concepto esencialmente teórico, se desarticulan
IOW, en tanto focuses on the 'totalidad inteligible' (i.e., the underlying concepto, or theory) that characterises identidades dominantes, as distinct from the materialisation/expression of those identities in the real world.
If the theory that sustains those identities falls apart, so too do the identities themselves - and (pardon my Latin...) vice versa.
Liberal translation:
the very concept of 'dominant identities' crumbles away

Discussion
Al considerarlas totalidades inteligibles, las identidades dominantes se desarticulan / Las identidades dominantes se desarticulan en cuanto totalidades inteligibles.
I.e. When understood/considered as intellible wholes, dominant identities [crumble] // As intelligible wholes, dominant identities [crumble]

'las identidades dominantes se desarticulan en tanto totalidades inteligibles'
... are disconnected (unhinged / no translators or interpreters meant, of course) qua intelligble, composite wholes' (this last bit an obvious autobiographical reference)
I think the writer means 'en calidad de'. See the following:
