Russian term
Этим определялась и ответственность моей работы.
Here is the full context but I only need help with the top phrase:
Это время было наиболее сложным во взаимоотношениях между двумя странами, периодом пересмотра отношений Советского Союза и Запада. Этим определялась и ответственность моей работы.

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Criticality of my work was determined by that.

: Your explanation is better than your translation. "Criticality" is not really a word; if you want to use it, you need "the" in front of it.

"Responsibility" was the first word that came to my mind. :)
|
That is where I came in.
There lay the essence of my responsibility
That was why my job/work came with so much responsibility.

If you are tempted to preserve the Russian sentence structure here, I would advise against it.

Susan Welsh
: I agree it's a little awkward, but can't think of anything better. I think you need to have "responsibility" in there somehow. "Significance" is not really the same.

"And with that came a lot of responsibility." Maybe.

This also determined how critical my work was.
Some variations: replacing "this" by "it", and "work" by "job" - but the latter would depend on the context - if "работа" means "position" rather than what the person was doing, then it's "job".
