Italian term
richiamo allergeni
Italian to English
Medical
Medical (general)
document on allergens
This is listed under preventive action to be taken to avoid contamination of food products with allergens. "Purchasing specifications "con richiamo allergeni"." Does this mean with warning of allergens, indication of allergens?? Other measures include supplier questionnaires allowing characteristics of raw materials to be guaranteed, separate storage of allergen-containing raw materials, etc. I just can't decide what exactly is meant by "richiamo" in this context. Can anybody help please? Thanks!

Allergen booster
Based on the logic of a vaccination "richiamo" I believe it would be this. However, I would check it against the context.

Admittedly I have a difficulty relating the idea of an allergen booster to the context, but I have the same problem with any other possible translation (including the other proposed. This is why I said 3 and not 4 or 5 on the certainty and recommended checking context more fully.
I doubt it will resolve the question completely but it may help to explain what an allergen booster is. Basically if you are not exposed to an allergen you can "loose" the allergy (to simplify).
It could be (and this just an idea) a booster of the chemical at the root of the allergy but not the general agent (i.e. the Allergen chemical in X , rather than X as a whole). I hope this helps in finding the solution.

Note from asker:
Thanks Andrew, in this context that doesn't work unfortunately. |
I have to agree with Kate - "booster" makes no sense in this context where allergens are being indicated to warn consumers who may be allergic to them. No company would add an allergen booster to a product - besides which "booster" is an entirely medical term and this is not a medical document. But thanks for the suggestion anyway. |

: Purchasing specifications with allergen booster? And for darwilliam - it's not a conspiracy - it's just wrong!

Recall due to discovery of allergens
I don't know if it's cheating to propose another option. But it just occurred to me that Richiamo could not be so tightly related to allergenico and it is a marketing recall due to the presence of allergens found after they would put on the shelves.

with reference to allergens / specifically mentioning
or clearly, explicitly...
richiamare basically means to refer to, or to mention again, something already written elsewhere.
since the document is purchasing specifications (i.e., it's directed to suppliers, not to consumers), I'm not sure "warning" would fit (or declared, reported, which also came to mind).
just a thought, though.

it seems to me that, as a preventive action, allergens which are required not to be contained must be clearly spelt out or highlighted in the purchasing specifications

i can't easily understand a warning like "contains traces of..." in the context of purchasing specification - where something along the lines of my suggestions above would make more sense to me. however, if "richiamo allergeni" is really followed by "contains traces of...", there's little room for doubts, it's a warning.

but someone might still enlighten me as to how can a statement like "contains traces of" be called "azione preventiva" :-?

: I understand the logic but why would richiamo be used instead of avviso o indicazione or any number of Italian terms that would be more natural in the context.
