It's from a text about the automatic gearbox of a car:
"Non prevede la selezione manuale dei rapporti, un "dettaglio" che ci sembra ormai irriununciabile, ma del quale, in realtà, ci si dimentica piuttosto in fretta. E in ogni caso, se ci si trovasse alle prese con una pendenza impegnativa, si può fare ricorso al tradizionalissimo **blocco delle marce**".
I'm not sure whether to translate it as "gear lock", "gear lockout" or something else ;-)

The 'traditional' way of getting into a low gear on an automatic gearbox, either for extra acceleration or to provide extra pull on a hill.
The sense of the word 'blocco' would here seem to be, 'something which interupts the normal succession of gears', which aptly describes the kick-down process.

On further research, I think that is wrong.
See the reference below. I think the correct term would be \'low gear hold\'. The gearbox is locked into a particular gear to avoid the auto changing to and fro on a gradient.
