Italian term

grembo

The quoted passage is taken from a recent architecture restoration handbook.

** Can I change my mind? I think "in the darkest recesses of history" would fit this perfectly! (or simply "in the recesses of history") **

bowels

as in "the bowels of the earth" - I've been turning this over and over in my mind and came up with this, which seems to fit in with the rest of the imagery.

womb

I know you were looking for a non-literal translation. But, it seems all this stuff is ground up to become something new (= reborn?) So, I actually think the meaning is close to "womb".
