Discussion

billcorno (X) Jul 30, 2014:
Both have the power to shape opinion but one is natural and the other is contrived.
Ramey Rieger (X) Jul 29, 2014:
Macht vs. mache Having power/influence as oppposed to striving to attain them - whether power/influence to create and maintain opinions or to make and uphold decisions, the solution lies in the 2nd part of the compound.
writeaway Jul 27, 2014:
@Machiel It may be a good idea if you explain it in German.
Machiel van Veen (X) Jul 27, 2014:
That's a relief. Indeed the two are connected, but the difference is not so subtile. The nuance is: the first is the making of the opinion, the second is the execution. One can't exchange them.
Dennis Boyd Jul 27, 2014:
@machiel To be clear, my ref was not saying the two terms are synonyms. On the contrary I sought to provide contextual examples and a collocation highlighting the nuances.
Machiel van Veen (X) Jul 27, 2014:
Meinungsmacht can be in the same Synonymgroup, but it's still not the same. As you've said yourself: Meinungsmacht is the power to shape opinion and Meinungsmache is spin or propaganda. The first is thus the power to do it and the second is the execution of it. Do I have to explain in German? Good luck.
Cilian O'Tuama Jul 27, 2014:
Is this a translation question? Or should it be better discussed as German monolingual?
Dennis Boyd Jul 26, 2014:
GermaNet and FAZ This is its entry on Meinungsmache:

Synonymgruppe: Meinungsmache, Propaganda

Oberbegriffe: Beeinflussen, Beeinflussung, Einfluss, Einflussnahme

Unterbegriffe: Aufwiegelung, Hetze, Indoktrination, Kriegspropaganda, NS-Propaganda, Verhetzung

And FAZ on a book titled MEINUNGSMACHT:

Die „Meinungsmacht“, so die These der kürzlich als Buch erschienenen Dissertation des Medienwissenschaftlers Uwe Krüger, liegt dann nicht bei einem einzelnen Machthaber (zum Beispiel der Staatszensur), sondern verteilt sich auf Netzwerke einflussreicher Eliten, in die auch meinungsbildende „Alpha-Journalisten“ eingebunden sind.
Ramey Rieger (X) Jul 26, 2014:
NOT EVEN CLOSE context
Machiel van Veen (X) Jul 26, 2014:
No, it's not the same. Please give the sentence.
writeaway Jul 26, 2014:
Please post the German sentence(s) in which the terms appear. Otherwise, just using a dictionary should do the trick. If they aren't the same in English, why do you suppose they are the same in German?
