Discussion

adamgajlewicz Feb 3, 2011:
@Ione Military recruitment is the act of requesting people, usually male adults, to join a military voluntarily. Involuntary military recruitment is known as conscription. The question which term is more appropriate depends on what/who they refer to and as I have noted they refer to Wehrpflichtige, Wehrdienstpflichtige, namely persons LIABLE for military service, conscripts (Brit) and draftees (US)

@Wendy: That's what I meant join the army join up British English , enlist American English
to join the army : He joined up when he was 18.
be called up British English , be drafted American English
to be ordered to serve in the army by the government : He was drafted into the US army in 1943. | Reserve soldiers were being called up.
conscription ( especially BrE ) (also the draft American English ) a government policy of ordering people to serve in the army : Conscription was introduced in 1916.
I'm sure draft board is OK, I provided ample evidence. I'm sure conscription is OK, too, it's more universal. Army recruitment office is also OK, but I remember a US military service rejecting a translation because it had army recruitment instead of draft board. Agree?

The only existing equivalent in England would be local army recruitment office, but I have to admit that Adam is right that in Austria it is a local conscription office.

neutral Wendy Streitparth : There is no conscription in UK

Sure thing, Wendy. Did I say there was conscription in the UK? What I meant was conscription (UK word) = draft (US word). See note discussion entry above.
