Comme d'habitude... Sans la phrase complète et, si besoin est pour bien cerner le contexte, les phrases précédente et suivante, il est bien difficile de vous proposer une traduction éclairée.

Plus précisément... Se défausser implique en général l'idée de transmettre à quelqu'un d'autre une responsabilité un peu encombrante... Donc, dans le cas d'une croyance, l'usage de ce terme me semble une impropriété de langage. Inutile de reporter ça dans le glossaire.

Ce n'est pas une utilisation très classique, car on se défausse plutôt d'une responsabilité ou d'une obligation... Dans le cas d'une croyance religieuse, cela peut tout au plus signifier "se débarrasser" ou "abandonner", à moins que la manière dont on se défausse donne plus d'indications...

Manque de contexte Au jeu, se défausser signifie se débarrasser d'une carte gênante... et par extension se décharger d'une responsabilité, etc.
Ici, il faudrait pour le moins savoir DE QUOI on se défausse...
