@BD Yes, I agree. I was thinking of smaller versions of those wire mesh nets they have beside escalators at railway stations to prevent objects dropping on to the track. Interesting point: the "cornes de protection" (spark gaps) have an electrical function; does this go for the raquettes too?

@claude-andrew Perhaps mesh guards. Difficult to know whether they are more like snowshoes or like tennis raquets! Early snowshoes were rather like tennis raquets, which might be why they are called raquettes.

Protective metal guards for church windows are called simply "wire guards" (and "raquette de protection" in French). You could use this if there are no other suggestions, e.g.: "lower protective wire guards"
