countertransference dynamics
Dear colleagues, I’m not completely sure about the meaning of “appraised by” in the sentence:
“Beneath the words, the intuitive clinician’s countertransferential responses to these communications of intense, negatively-valenced affects are appraised by the therapist’s observations of his own visceral reactions to the patient’s material.”
This sentence is taken from the passage below about transference-countertransference dynamics.
*********************************
The reactivation of early right-lateralized negatively valenced autobiographical memories is communicated in bidirectional, nonverbal, nonconscious, right brain/mind/body affectively stressful transactions between the patient and therapist. Transferential body-based limbic-autonomic communications are expressed in nonverbal, visual, auditory, and gestural affective cues that are spontaneously generated from the face, voice, and body of the patient. Beneath the words, the intuitive clinician’s countertransferential responses to these communications of intense, negatively-valenced affects *** are appraised by *** the therapist’s observations of his own visceral reactions to the patient’s material. The empathic clinician’s countertransferences to the patient’s unconscious communications are thus experienced as subjective interoceptive autonomic responses that are reactions on an unconscious level to the patient’s nonverbal messages.
************************
My hypothesis about the meaning of “appraised by” is the following: “taking a decision (about countertransferential responses) based on (therapist’s observations of his own visceral reactions)”.
So a rephrasing might be: In “deciding” about his countertransferential responses, the intuitive clinician relies upon the observation of his own visceral reactions to the patient’s material”. I’m not completely sure, though...
Thank you so much for your attention and patience...

English term (edited):
Appraised by
Selected
Measured, regulated based on
The only meaning I can take from this is that he measures/regulates/assesses his responses according to how he perceives his own unconscious reactions.

: with assessed. NB the common mix-up with apprise *of* = inform of: London Met Police and Daily Mail newspaper 'the officers have been appraised of the situation = apprised of the situation'.

: The sentence is badly written and the meaning unclear, but this seems a reasonable guess.

Assess and evaluate the seriousness
I think that the intended meaning here is that the seriousness/intensity of what the patient is going through is being assessed and evaluated through the doctor's observation...

appraise by
I feel like in this sentence; you can sort of just swap out appraised with measured against or measured using. This is just my opinion, however.

Discussion
Paul, I didn't think of a typo... but actually I think the meaning may be the one you explained... because as far as I know, in empathy, one can "know" the feelings of another person by "becoming aware of"/feeling what is inside his own body (interoception) i. e. the changes in his own body induced by the interaction with another person.. (I'm sorry I find it difficult to explain in English...)
The word appraise is often in the sense of "evaluate".
