English term

...hiv diagnoses by year of HIV infected women...

English Medical Medical (general) HIV/AIDS
First time I've used the EN-EN forum so hope this is the sort of thing people can help with. I'm revising this text (author is Dutch-speaking) and am stumped by the asterisked sentence. This has to be delivered first thing Thursday (CET) so if anyone can help decipher it, I'd be very grateful. This is the original version i.e. unrevised. Needless to say, I haven't got the Figure to look at.

Hiv/Aids
The numbers of women affected by HIV/AIDS as compared to men, since 2001, are the following:
- 85% of the HIV infections (women) are the result of sexual contact (Appendix 2, Table 13). The number of **hiv diagnoses by year of HIV infected women** is decreasing (Appendix 2, Figure 2).

Discussion

Anna Maria Augustine (X) Oct 16, 2006:
Hi Moira. Women are infected but not diagnosed so this means the number of those infected and diagnosed with the disease is decreasing. There are women who are infected but have never been diagnosed.
yolanda Speece Oct 11, 2006:
I don't mean to be difficult but I can see where your confusion is.
yolanda Speece Oct 11, 2006:
Are there less diagnoses because less women are coming in for testing or because they are becoming more educated about how to protect themselves? Are there less women coming in for testing or less women are getting infected?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Not much between the answers once the penny had dropped as to what it meant (which it did as soon as I re-read the question after a good night's sleep!). I actually opted for 'diagnosed HIV-positive' rather than '...-infected'. Thanks, everyone!"

Diagnoses per year of HIV infected women are decreasing

The diagnosis per year of HIV infected women is decreasing or:

The diagnoses per year .... are decreasing. I would take out the first hiv.

Or very simply: There are less women being diagnosed per year as HIV infected.

The annual number of women diagnosed to be HIV infected is decreasing.

I think the text refers to women who were previously categorised as "uninfected" and then diagnosed to be "infected" later on. So, it shouldn't be those who have already been infected.

Using "annual" instead of "year" makes the text professional IMVHO.
