English term

bankability

English Art/Literary Linguistics
"XXX company delivers services and certificates proving your products' bankability."

Could you help me with the context here? what does bankability mean?

I have checked the dictionary. I think it is supposed to mean that the products are beneficial/profitable to those who use them. Is this the correct meaning?

Thank you

It's all linguistics... You could describe the whole proz site as linguistics - the usefulness of answers to kudoz questions is usually directly proportional to the amount of context that is given - you were lucky that someone like Stephanie with knowledge of the field was able to recognize the use of the term.

You have a point. I thought this was a simple matter of choosing the right meaning. I checked the dictionary and saw that there were two different definitions, both applicable to to the context. Sorry for this mistake. If you're the moderator, you can displace the question to the appropriate section. Thank you

2 questions What led Stephanie to ask if it is about solar energy, and given that it IS, why did the asker post it as art/literary - Linguistics.
Yasin Koç (asker) Nov 14, 2011:
hi yes. this is a solar energy company.
Stephanie Ezrol Nov 14, 2011:
There may be another meaning to bankability if this is a product about solar energy. Is it about solar energy?

reliability

There are common expressions like: you can bank on it, it's as good as money in the bank.

All of these expressions are ways of saying this product is rock solid, 100 percent reliable, as good as gold.

I belive that is how they are using the term.

This term is used frequently in the solar energy industry with a similar meaning, but perhaps a bit more specific.

"Bankability", in lose terms, means that a financial institution is willing to finance a solar project that includes components of a supplier part of its white list.

Here is one more:

"The opportunity we are going to unlock is a solar market not slowed down by the issue of bankability," according to Jenya Meydbray, the CEO of PV Evolution Labs.

"Bankability" is a fuzzy term but it roughly equates to the ten or twelve top solar panel manufacturers that developers and financiers are comfortable with. Although these firms have had product in the field for decades and have shipped millions of panels, bankability is less a quantitative and more a qualitative term

Note from asker:
Thank you. You seem to be on the right track, since solar energy requires investment as an innovative technology.

agree JH Trads : I undestand it the same way, also 'dependability'. If the context is solar energy, there is naturally a notion of 'profitability' in the general sense (which obviously implies going beyond the breakeven point)

Thanks Hugo !
agree Mark Nathan : although following on from Hugo, note that bankability is not the same as profitability. You might reduce your fuel bill.

it is viable and deserving of financial support with low risk

I understand it to mean that the product can be "banked", that is, given financial support. It is viable and the risk involved in giving it financial support is low.
Peer comment(s):

agree B D Finch : Whether for solar energy or anything else.
