I guess that the above word is used either for a girl or woman but I am not quite aware of its entire connotations, e.g. whether a father can address his daughter as LOL or a male lover can call his sweetheart by this word.
I tried to locate this word in a comprehensive English to English dictionary but in vain. That is why, I am going to bother you. I shall be thankful if you could also explain the origin of this word.
Thanks in anticipation.

Examples of usage:
1.-LOL, after sending you an e-mail asking why you hadn\'t written in months, my inbox said \"You\'ve Got Mail!\" and it was from you!
2.-I spent all my allowance on eBay toys! (LOL).

As you can see, LOL is simply an abbreviation to express amusement, rather than a term of endearment. And of course, anyone is welcome to use it, whether it\'s between friends, parents and kids, lovers, etc. (either online, or handwritten, as in a diary for example.)
Hope this helps!

As far as I am aware, this is an abbreviation used in e-mail, instant messaging and SMS messaging that means smiling.
