The colour of the monitor solution must be comparable to the colour of the reference solution.
The test involves preparing 4 solutions: a reference, monitor, test and blank. If the color of
i) the test < reference,
ii) monitor = reference, and
iii) reference > blank ,
the test is valid and the sample is below the limit.

При титровании с метиловым оранжевым удобно пользоваться свидетелем, т.е. раствором, который имеет окраску, до которой следует титровать исследуемый раствор.

: в титровании такое раствор называют свиделетелем//я титровала со свидетелем:) но я не уверена, что в данном случае это свидетель

Вы знали :)). А я думал свидетели только в хроматографии бывают. Теперь сам Бог Вам велел дать это в виде ответа и занести его в словарь. Все-таки не просто вкусовая поправка, а точный термин.
