English term

small-cell drug research

English to Polish Medical Other
When faced with the biotech revolution, for example, many established life-sciences companies sought to buy small firms that would provide a base of new technology to feed into their regulatory and marketing activities. However, many of the acquiring firms underestimated the organizational differences between traditional small-cell drug research and new genome-based research

Discussion

Best of luck to you in your research. Let's hope for big results, regardless of the expense and manpower.

It is not only less complex - it is also less expensive and requires much less manpower. That's why I can do it in the university - and do not have to work for a big pharma ;-)
We need expert opinions like yours here, Błażej. The only time small-cell is mentioned is in connection with small-cell carcinoma and the like. I also doubted the smallness of cell in my answer box. "na małą skalę" implies small-size research - research in small groups with limited resources - not less complex research, as you suggest in your discussion comment (with which I agree).
Błażej Rychlik Feb 8, 2015:
As a practitioner in cell-based drug research I can assure you that the size of cells does not matter - they are practically all small. The text is somehow defective but comparison of 'traditional ... drug research' and 'genome-based research' strongly suggests that the scale and complexity is the main difference.
What we have here is clearly an inappropriate use of language, as small-cell does not make sense. Small-scale drug research on the cell level is not what the sentence says - it is an extrapolation beyond the text. I believe someone tried to accentuate the small size of cells and the even smaller scale of the human genome. Is traditional cell drug research always on a small scale or a the cells themselves small?

badania nad lekami na poziomie komórek na małą skalę

Inna interpretacja.

A possible interpretation. Small may refer to small-cell lung cancer, for example, or may simply be an unnecessary intensifier.

The sentence does not speak of small-scale drug research, only of "small-cell', as in small-cell carcinoma, so-called for the small appearance of the cells under the microscope. It may be that small has to be omitted as cell size does not have to be explained.

neutral Polangmar : Co to jest "poziom małokomórkowy"?

This is what small-cell means. "small scale drug research" is another kettle of fish.
