Discussion

Tony M Oct 29, 2016:
@ Daryo I quite agree with your comments about context; but I am very puzzled where everyone is getting this idea of the 'port' side of a vessel from? There is a clear difference in EN between 'a port-sided vessel' and 'the port side of a vessel' and a 'side-ported vessel'!
Daryo Oct 29, 2016:
it's not good giving your translation for the context info;

from what a cursory Google search would suggest the "vessel" in "Side-ported vessel" IS NOT at all "un bâteau" and is not even attached to the "port" side of a vessel! Now, it's not set in stone, but with the info you have made available, no ways of knowing ...

What would help is the ST as it is in EN, with what's before and after "Side-ported vessel" and possibly a bit more than just a short list!
Françoise Vogel Oct 28, 2016:
pardon... quel est le rapport entre les points 1, 2, 3 en français et la question?

vaisseau bâbordé

Since port and starboard never change, they are unambiguous references that are independent of a mariner’s orientation, and, thus, mariners use these nautical terms instead of left and right to avoid confusion. When looking forward, toward the bow of a ship, port and starboard refer to the left and right sides, respectively. - http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/port-starboard.html

Peer comment(s):

disagree Daryo : if you look at real life uses of "side ported vessel" or even just "side ported" no mention of any kind of vessel=ship whatsoever! This contraption might be on a ship but "ported" in search results doesn't show any signs of meaning the "port side" ...

compartiment/réservoir babord

suggéré car le contexte est très vague
il faudrait le § complet
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : I can't see anything in the source text that relates to 'compartiment' or 'réservoir' — still less to 'bâbord'?
