Bonjour,
It’s not just about the money.
The side with the bigger list of terms wins.
Because then you can give up the nickels in exchange for the dimes.
Things to be negotiated: vacation time, medical leaves, bonuses, what requirements are in place for promotions, what’s the non-compete, employee ownership (in some cases), potential profit participation, moving expenses, etc.
Merci à tous.

: It’s not just about the money. + where do see "petite augmentation de salaire"?? The point is to aim high, but not only in terms of money!

Isn't a nickel more than a dime ? I would think he's saying that you might not get the big money (nickels) but if you can have other advantages, why not lower your demands and accept less money (dimes) ? Edit: Yep, I got my numbers wrong, you're right.

: "you can give up the nickels in exchange for the dimes" is a general negotiating tactic and in fact can be about anything; even in this ST it's not about getting a pay rise.

[It’s not just about the money.

15 years ago, one expert negotiator, Dr. Larry Brilliant (his real name), who later became head of all of Google’s charity work, gave me advice, “Always make sure your list is bigger than theirs so you can give up the nickels in exchange for the dimes.”
https://jamesaltucher.com/2016/08/learned-fbis-best-hostage-...
the point of the method: you make a long list ("make sure your list is bigger than theirs") of not so important demands (the "nickels") so you can trade lots of these not so important demands to make the other side give up just few important demands (the "dimes")
BTW 1 dime = 10 cents vs. 1 nickel = 5 cents - it's not some huge disparity in values!
Nickel
Worth 5 cents. It is made of a nickel and copper blend. It is larger than a penny.
It has Thomas Jefferson on the front and Monticello (Jefferson's colonial plantation) on the back.
Dime
Worth 10 cents. It is made of a nickel and copper blend. It is smaller than a penny or a nickel.
It has Franklin D. Roosevelt on the front and a torch on the back.

you have a very "creative" interpretation for words you are using - all I see here is a translation that is simple and clear and explains the key point, and BTW works perfectly well in ANY situation where this kind of negotiating method could be used.
