Lorsqu'un utilisateur doit utiliser ensemble 2 systèmes informatiques qui ne sont pas (encore) connectés, il doit souvent passer d'un système à l'autre, parfois écrire dans un système ce qu'il lit dans l'autre. On dit qu'il "swivelchair" entre les 2 systèmes. En réalité, les 2 systèmes peuvent être dans 2 fenêtres d'un même écran. Swivel chair is a slang term for a common interface work-around that involves manually entering data into one system and then entering the same data into another system. The term is derived from the practice of the user turning from one system to another using a swivel chair. The swivel chair interface can be eliminated with better network management and unified interfaces and data integration."

ça veut dire qu'on retape au clavier de l'ordinateur B ce qui apparaît à l'écran de l'ordinateur A parce qu'il n'y a pas d'autre moyen de transfert - on fait "pivoter la chaise" entre A et B.
