Google Ads here - out of control? (staff: 'thanks, steps have been taken') Thread poster: Stephanie Wloch
|
I never paid much attention to the little Google Ads here. But just some minutes ago there was one which astonished me a bit.
Sexy Baltic Ladies
Single ladies from Baltic countries are looking for love

Is this a blunder or quite normal?
Rubbing my eyes in disbelief.

No need to submit support as I have already blocked the ad via Google adsense.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Hi Tuliparola,
please make screenshots of this and send to ProZ Staff via Support Request. The question of Google ads has come up recently, however the Staff was not able to reproduce this (possibly because these ads change every few minutes, besides, members don't see any Google ads.
TIA,
Uldis

Full members see ads in Forum overview | Jan 15, 2009 |
Thanks for the quick answer, Drew!

Not true. Full members with open eyes can see them in
the forum overview
http://www.proz.com/forum
Lori when I'm logged out I can even see them here in this
section, but logged in just in the forum overview.

I can't see any ads in the forum overview. And I can't remember seeing any in the past...

I couldn't see any ads here either even though I have Firefox's Adblock Plus disabled here. Anyway, I went from Firefox to IE and logged out and voila! the naughty ads:
PS.
Has html code been disabled in the forums? The code below doesn't work.

Textklick Local time: 04:31 German to English + ... In memoriam Visible to site visitors! | Jan 15, 2009 |
I noticed this when I upgraded my browser and its 'remember page on this computer' was out of action.
Consequently I had to log in each time for a while. I was surprised at all the ads that appeared prior to login and wondered about the impression that a a non-user/non-member site visitor would get?
Does Proz need this? | | |

I think Proz is becoming a fun website.
I have a daily 'date with my translation', sir. It starts a bit early and for all you know, it might - to use your words - be a 'nice little money earner'.
Some of my clients are really fun to work with, but I don't want their sense of humour or perception of the site to be stretched that far. This is where issues such as site security and seriousness could evolve.
What's next? "Find a good restaurant near this outsourcer"...
We are not, and should not, become a 'bizarre bazaar', IMHO.
I was also very surprised to see Google Ads | Jan 16, 2009 |

I saw them yesterday when I went to log in. Some were specific to Belgium. It doesn't add anything positive to the site and reduces it to looking like one of those sites that are out to make money as best they can, although I can't imagine it will deter job seekers.

Steffen Walter Germany Local time: 05:31 Member (2002) English to German + ... Disable ads altogether | Jan 16, 2009 |
Hi all,
I strongly believe that staff should reconsider the use (or enabling on the site) of these ads, and disable them/discontinue their use for good. This is just not in line with the profesional image the site wants to convey according to its mission.
(I've just alerted staff to this thread again.)
Best,
Steffen

Taija Hyvönen Finland Local time: 06:31 Member (2008) English to Finnish + ... I didn't know "those" ads were not supposed to be here | Jan 16, 2009 |
I get them all the time between posts on these threads; I'm already used to scrolling them so that I don't have to look at them when I read the posts. Well, all the better if we can get rid of them.
Google ads can be fun though, when their guesses are just a little bit off the target. I used to get these dating ads all the time on Gmail when I got mail from a women's rights group mailing list - I was interested in women, yes, but...

I've never seen these ads, whether logged in or not, because I use Firefox + AdBlockPlus. I do agree, however, that they are certainly not improving the site's professional image. Looks like Google is causing a lot of problems these days ...
