- An estimate of the risk of mortality from a contagious disease. The CFR is calculated by dividing the number of deaths caused by a disease by the number of cases of that disease in a given time period. The CFR is time and location-dependent, and many different factors can influence the CFR, such as speed of diagnosis of cases, health system capacity, age and other demographic characteristics, among others. For COVID-19, estimates of the CFR have varied; in China, CFR estimates by province have ranged from <1% to 5.8%. Kaiser Family Foundation

- Letalità e mortalità
In medicina con il termine letalità ci si riferisce al numero di morti sul numero di malati di una certa malattia entro un tempo specificato. La letalità è una misura della gravità di una malattia e si usa in particolar modo per le malattie infettive acute. La mortalità, che spesso viene erroneamente confusa con la letalità, è concettualmente differente e porta a risultati molto diversi, in quanto mette a rapporto il numero di morti per una determinata malattia (o addirittura per tutte le cause) sul totale della popolazione media presente nello stesso periodo di osservazione.
Di conseguenza, esistono malattie che pur avendo una letalità altissima hanno una mortalità insignificante, in quanto poco frequenti nella popolazione totale. Per il COVID-19 siamo di fronte a un fenomeno a discreta letalità e, attualmente, a bassissima mortalità. La distinzione tra tasso di letalità e tasso di mortalità è sostanziale sia per fare chiarezza sull’impatto nella popolazione, sia per decidere azioni di sanità pubblica. Da questa distinzione si può comprendere quanto sia importante contenere la diffusione del contagio: se aumentassero i contagiati ci sarebbero più casi “letali”.
