- "A digitális megosztottság fogalma viszonylag fiatal kifejezés, mely az Egyesült Államokból ered, ahol nagy hagyománya van az információhoz és a kommunikációs eszközökhöz való egyenlő hozzáférés eszményének. A nyolcvanas évektől használt információ-szegények és információ-gazdagok megkülönböztetést váltja föl a ’90-es évek közepétől a „digitális megosztottság” („digital divide”) kifejezés." - Digitální propast odkazuje na rozdíly mezi lidmi s faktickým přístupem k digitálním a informačním technologiím a lidmi bez přístupu k nim. Jde především o užívání počítačů, mobilní komunikace a internetu. Omezení přístupu k těmto technologiím je často způsobeno příslušností lidí do určité genderové, příjmové, etnické či jiné skupiny, nebo je definováno geograficky (tzv. globální digitální propast). Vzhledem k digitalizaci společnosti a nutnosti efektivní práce s informacemi se rozdíly v používání takových technologií stávají skutečným zdrojem sociální nerovnosti a sociálního vyloučení.
