Happy day after Mother’s Day to all the moms listening in. Thanks for listening to the podcast. We’re often asked parenting questions. You know that, Pastor John. And it is not uncommon to hear from moms who want advice on how to raise young boys into men. This applies to single moms and their special challenges in parenting, which we got into back in APJ 1075 in the archive. But share with us, Pastor John, just broad counsel that would apply to Christian mothers — whether they’re single moms, or moms married to non-Christian men, or moms married to Christian men. In these various situations, what’s a mom’s role in raising boys?
The first thing I would say to a mom is teach your son. Teach him especially the word of God, and how to see the world through that lens. If you’re married to a believer, you and your husband together teach the whole counsel of God to your son. “Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching” (Proverbs 1:8). Or, “My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not your mother’s teaching” (Proverbs 6:20).
Remember, there’s that wonderful story of Lois and Eunice in 2 Timothy, where Paul says to this young man, “Continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it” (2 Timothy 3:14). And who’s that? That’s his mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois (from 2 Timothy 1:5). We know that. And we know from Acts that his father was not a Christian. I think that should be encouraging to mothers — that Paul chose, for his missionary band, a young man who was largely formed in his faith by his mother and his grandmother.
Require Obedience
The next thing I would say is expect obedience from your son. “Children, obey your parents” — not just your father, but your parents. Mother, get your son to obey you. May he obey “in the Lord” (Ephesians 6:1). It’s dismaying to me to watch one-year-olds, two-, three-, four-year-old kids make their parents miserable because the parents have not required obedience at home. So in public, they have no control over them. They don’t get any kind of respect in public. The kids just do what they want to do; they wrap their parents around their finger.
Mom, you can require and receive obedience from your son. Teach this little one, from the earliest times, with words and with spankings if necessary, that you have God-given authority in his life. He does not decide what is acceptable behavior. You do, all the time. Reward him joyfully. Make him happy in the boundaries that you set for him. Do all the good possible for him, and punish him appropriately for the bad that he does. That’s so crucial, if you want to have a happy home and a happy public life with your children, and to be just plain obedient to the Scriptures.
Model Strong Womanhood
Then I would say, model strong womanhood. Peter says, speaking to the women in the church, “You are her children” — Sarah’s children — “if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening” (1 Peter 3:6). I just love that verse. The godly woman in the Bible is fearless because she hopes in God. That’s what it says. She puts her hope in God.
Or Proverbs 31:25: “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.” Oh, how needed in our day is that, right? Everybody’s trembling and wringing their hands about the time to come, and the Proverbs 31 woman is laughing at the time to come. A son should look to his mother not as a weak woman who is always anxious about tomorrow, but as a stable oak of righteousness who laughs at the time to come because she trusts in a sovereign God.
Honor Your Husbands
Then I would say, honor the leadership and protective instincts of your husband. Let your son see this. “Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands” (Ephesians 5:24). A son should see a strong woman joyfully deferring to the initiatives, leadership, protection, and provision of her husband — the spiritual leadership of a strong man. Of course, a Christian wife does not follow a husband into sin (that should be obvious). She makes clear, “There is one, supreme Lord in my life: Jesus Christ.” But under that lordship, she delights to honor her husband’s leadership.
One Strong Mom
And I can’t help but be a little bit autobiographical here because I think some of my thinking about competence in complementarianism was shaped by my home. I grew up in a home where my father was away two-thirds of the year: weeks gone, week at home, weeks gone, week at home. He was an evangelist. My mother, in his absence, did everything. She was, in my view, omnicompetent.
She taught me just about everything practical that I know to this day, and she made me a worker. She made me love diligence. She never once gave me the impression that she couldn’t do anything. She paid the bills. She ran the little laundromat. She tried her hand at Amway. She climbed a ladder and painted the eaves of the rotting house. She pushed a wheelbarrow — I watched the sweat drip off the end of her nose as we were digging our own basement. She pulled the Bermuda grass out and taught me how to get it by the roots so they wouldn’t grow back. She loved flower beds. She taught me how to cut the grass so that you overlap and you don’t get skippers when you do the grass cutting.
She said, “Johnny, cut the potatoes like this and wait until the oil is boiling, because if you put the potatoes in before the oil is boiling, they’ll get soggy, and you won’t get good fries. And when you make pancakes, wait until the bubbles around the edge are forming, because if you try to flip them too early, they’ll flop all over the place.”
Not About Competence
She taught me everything there was to know, practically, in our home growing up. Which taught me this lesson: the biblical roles of a wife’s submission and a husband’s headship in marriage are not based on competence — like, “You do this because you’re good at it.” That’s not the point. They are based on the deeper realities of how God designed male and female, and how we flourish in those kinds of relationships.
But when my dad came home from being away for weeks, my mother beamed with joy that now he could lead. He’d lead in the discipline of the children. He’d lead in giving counsel. He’d lead in prayer. He would lead by saying, “Let’s go to church. Let’s get there on time.” He’d lead by saying, “Let’s go out to eat.” He could model the small courtesies that a man offers a woman and that a boy needs to learn in the dynamic between a mother and a father: pulling out her chair, opening the car door, checking out strange noises in the house, and on and on and on.
A man is a man, and a woman is a woman. And a boy watches this; he absorbs it. So, as a boy, I watched that dance, that choreography, and I marveled at my mother. In his absence, she could do everything; in his presence, she loved it, she flourished when he took that kind of manly initiative. That’s what we need to show our sons, that they are not belittling or demeaning when they take initiative to protect, to provide, to lead a woman.
Give Him Examples
I would also say, point your son to strong manhood in Scripture, in history, in fiction, in media, and in your husband. I don’t mean, necessarily, when I say “strong manhood,” physical brawn. What I mean is true, masculine, responsible, mature, sacrificial, protective initiative with courage and strength. You don’t have to be a football player to be that kind of man. If there’s no husband to be the model, if you’re a single mom, find ways to point your son to the kind of men who embody mature manhood. I think my mother was very jealous that that happened in my father’s absence.
Expect Strong Manhood
One last thing. Expect strong manhood from your son. Give the boy responsibility early on. Require as much as you can, as he grows older, of his manly behavior. Insist on politeness toward his sister or toward you, other women, other girls. My mother taught me, “Don’t you go through a girl’s purse — ever.” Walk on the street side when you’re walking beside a young lady, in case there’s a splash or some danger. Offer to open the door. Pay for the date. Use respectful language. Take responsibility. Be willing to sacrifice. You build into your son, as a woman, what the appropriate dynamics are between a man and a woman, to be biblical in your understanding of headship and submission.
Now, I know there’s so much more that we could say, oh my goodness. So, seek God’s wisdom in creating a healthy, Christ-exalting home. Seek his wisdom. He’ll help you. If Dad is there, that’s just great. He is crucial in raising daughters, just as you are crucial in raising sons. And if he’s not, if he’s not there, and you’re a single mom, trust God to make up the difference. He’s done that for thousands. God is faithful, and he works for moms who wait for him.

Exige Obediencia
Lo siguiente que le diría es que exija obediencia por parte de su hijo. «Hijos, obedeced a vuestros padres», no solo a uno, sino a ambos. Madre, haz que tu hijo te obedezca. Que obedezca «en el Señor» (Efesios 6:1). Me entristece ver cómo niños de un año, dos, tres o cuatro años hacen sufrir a sus padres porque estos no les han exigido obediencia en casa. Así que, en público, no tienen ningún control sobre ellos. No reciben ningún tipo de respeto en público. Los niños hacen lo que quieren; manipulan a sus padres con un gesto.
Mamá, puedes exigir y recibir obediencia de tu hijo. Desde la más tierna infancia, enséñale con palabras y, si es necesario, con azotes que tienes la autoridad que Dios te ha dado en su vida. Él no decide qué es un comportamiento aceptable. Tú decides lo que es aceptable. Recompénselo con alegría. Hazle feliz dentro de los límites que le impongas. Hazle todo el bien posible y castígale adecuadamente por el mal que haga. Esto es crucial si quieres tener un hogar feliz y una vida pública feliz con tus hijos y ser obediente a las Escrituras.

Honrad A Vuestros Maridos

Help for the Overly Introspective
To many, the idea of self-examination sounds about as enjoyable as standing before the mirror and slowly surveying your bodily imperfections. Who has heard, “Let’s spend some time examining ourselves,” and smiled?
For some, self-examination may even recall memories we have tried hard to forget. Maybe, in some miserable past, we spent untold hours digging inwardly, desperately trying to root out hidden sins. In the process, we discovered just how dark and hopeless — how Christless — life underground can be. I can sympathize. I remember times when I felt locked in my own soul like Christian in the castle of Giant Despair. I’ve lived through long seasons without spiritual sunshine. Morbid introspection still tempts me today.
But alongside that dismal past and present danger, I’ve also discovered something unexpected: the cure for unhealthy introspection is not simply to think about yourself less, but to think about yourself better. Yes, self-examination can become a prison cell of introspective gloom — but it need not. Done rightly, self-examination can become a pathway to spiritual health, a friend who leads us inward only to lead us further outward, who shows us self so we might see more of Christ.
Search Me, O God
But why, some may ask, do we need to examine ourselves at all? If God transforms us as we behold Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18), why would we spend any time beholding self? We change by the outward look, not the inward, don’t we? Indeed we do. We are plants who grow by the rain of self-forgetful worship, the sun of Christward praise. Nevertheless, even well-watered, well-lit plants need to watch for thorns. Similarly, self-examination doesn’t grow us by itself, but it may clear the ground for growth — and keep us from getting choked.
In Scripture, healthy saints look outward mainly, but they don’t look outward only. Like Timothy, they keep a close watch not only on the gospel but on themselves (1 Timothy 4:16). Like David, they love to consider God’s glory in sky and Scripture, but they also allow that glory to illuminate self (Psalm 19:11–14). As the author of Hebrews exhorts, they devote their best attention to “looking to Jesus,” but from time to time they also consider the weights and sins that slow their pace (Hebrews 12:1–2).
The wise know that spiritual progress yesterday does not guarantee spiritual progress today. Judases become traitors and Demases become worldlings one small, self-deceived step at a time. And as both history and experience testify, it is all too possible to live a half-life as a Christian, bearing tenfold fruit when one hundredfold could be ours — if only we would stop to pull the thorns that block our way.
“The unexamined life is not worth living,” Socrates famously said. And we justly add that the unexamined soul will not go on living — or will limp instead of run.
How to Examine Yourself
How then might we examine ourselves without becoming imprisoned by introspection? How might we draw water from the soul’s well without falling in?
Healthy self-examination can take many forms, and what helps one soul may help another less. As with prayer and Bible reading and other spiritual disciplines, Scripture gives us principles but leaves plenty of room for personal application. Consider, then, some basic guidelines for self-examination and how you might make them your own.
1. Plan to examine yourself.
Often, self-examination becomes morbid when it turns from a spiritual practice to a spiritual atmosphere: a vague cloud of condemnation that follows you around, a crippling sense of self-consciousness.
Scripture never counsels such a constant inner gaze. The life of a saint is a self-forgetful, Godward, others-oriented life. “Love God” and “love neighbor” are the twin priorities of our days (Matthew 22:37–39); “examine yourself” is a practice meant to serve those greater loves. And strangely enough, one way we might reclaim healthy self-examination is by giving it a thoughtful, well-defined spot in our schedule. Instead of perpetually examining yourself, plan to examine yourself.
Such a plan will include a specific when. Many saints across church history have benefited from a brief time of self-examination every evening, a few minutes when we can remember the day’s mercies and confess the day’s sins. But for growing in the practice of self-examination, especially for those prone to morbidity, I might suggest something a little longer but less frequent — say once a week (perhaps in place of a normal devotional time).
As important as the when is the what. Where will you focus your attention? For most of us, “examine yourself” offers too broad a charge. But “examine your prayer life,” “examine your friendships,” “examine your parenting,” “examine your relationship with money” — these we can get our hands around.
I find it helpful to think in two broad categories for self-examination: callings and concerns. By callings, I mean the areas of responsibility God has given you: disciple of Jesus, husband or wife, mother or father, church member, friend, neighbor, employee, and so on.
And by concerns, I mean those areas of your soul that call for careful attention. Say, for example, you feel a pang of envy on a Tuesday afternoon at work. You confess the pang but don’t have time in the moment, or perhaps even in the day, to plumb its depths, even though you sense it would be helpful to do so. Why did I feel that? Where did that come from? Having a plan for self-examination allows you to say, “I’m not sure, but I don’t need to figure that out now. I’ll return to it on Friday” — or whenever you have planned.
2. Let God’s word guide you.
So there you are on Friday morning (or whenever), with time set aside for self-examination. What might that time look like? We might take some cues from David’s prayer in Psalm 139:23–24:
Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!
David knows that only the Searcher of hearts can expose our hearts; only God can make us known to us. So, instead of diving into his own soul unaided, he asks God himself to search him. Notice, however, that David doesn’t simply ask God to search him; he also places himself in the presence of this searching God. Most of Psalm 139 travels the depths of God, not self. David stands in awe of God’s all-knowing thoughts, God’s all-seeing eyes, God’s all-encompassing presence, God’s all-consuming righteousness. And then, in the context of this profound Godwardness, David says, “Search me.”
Psalm 139 (and the rest of Scripture) gives self-examination a decidedly asymmetrical focus: we see ourselves rightly only in relation to God. So, if you want to examine yourself well, follow David and place yourself in God’s presence. Practically, as you examine yourself, allow adoration to play just as significant a role as confession. And all along the way, treat God’s word as your best guide — the word given for our reproof and correction (2 Timothy 3:16), the only word that can discern the heart (Hebrews 4:12).
To that end, consider choosing a passage relevant to your present focus and using it like a pathway into the soul. If you want to examine your prayer life, linger over the Lord’s Prayer. If you want to examine your husbanding, look into the mirror of Ephesians 5:22–33. If you want to get beneath some persistent tug toward bitterness, walk slowly through Psalm 37 or 73. And as you do, ask God himself to search you.
3. Query your soul and confess your sins.
To sharpen our self-examination, we might look again to David’s prayer. As he asks God to search him, he doesn’t ask God to reveal everything about him. But he does ask to see “any grievous way in me” — any unknown or half-known sin, any deepening unbelief, any developing pattern that could keep him from following “the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:24).
Similarly, we don’t need to treat self-examination as an exhaustive enterprise. We cannot know everything about ourselves, or even everything about one part of ourselves. No matter how self-aware we become, we will die knowing ourselves, just as we know God, only “in part” (1 Corinthians 13:12). But we do want to see anything that needs our present attention — any poisonous bud that could open into grievous sin.
As we meditate on a passage, we may find help from asking questions like the following (drawn from page 148 of Tim Keller’s book Prayer):
1. Am I living in light of this?
2. What difference does this make?
3. If I believed and held to this, how would that change things?
4. When I forget this, how does that affect me and all my relationships?
If such questions reveal sins we have tolerated, habits we need to stop, subtle compromises that have grown over time, good — our self-examination is bearing fruit. An hour ago, something troubling lay hidden in the soul; now no longer. Now we can take it, place it before the Lord who knows us exhaustively yet loves us eternally, and say with David,
I acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. (Psalm 32:5)
4. Forget about yourself.
Self-examination, like deep-sea diving, is a good but occasional exercise. God has not given us enough light or oxygen to swim always in the deeps; sun and air and land await us above. So, once you have queried your soul and confessed whatever sins you’ve seen, return to the surface.
The prayer acronym A.C.T.S. puts thanksgiving after confession for good reason: in Christ, confession of sin is not a room but a doorway, not a wall but a path. God would not have us sit forever in some gloomy cellar of guilt; he would have us sing under the blue sky of his kindness and walk in the broad fields of his grace, his steadfast love our atmosphere (Psalm 32:10). So, if self-examination does not regularly lead us to a fuller, deeper, sweeter taste of God’s grace in Jesus, then somewhere self-examination has gone wrong.
The end of self-examination is not self-consciousness, but Christ-consciousness. Yes, we have scrutinized our souls for a time, but only so we might bring our sins to Christ and receive his strength to walk a better way. The last step of self-examination, then, is simply this: forget about yourself. Go love your God. Go love the people he has placed before you. Go walk in “the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:24).

Para algunos, el autoexamen puede incluso traer recuerdos que nos hemos esforzado por olvidar. Tal vez pasamos horas incontables explorando nuestro interior en algún pasado miserable, tratando de arrancar de raíz los pecados ocultos con desesperación. En el proceso, descubrimos lo oscura y desesperanzada —y lo poco cristiana— que puede ser la vida allí abajo. Lo comprendo. Recuerdo momentos en los que me sentía encerrado en mi propia alma como Christian en el castillo de La Desesperación Gigante. He pasado largas temporadas sin luz espiritual. La introspección enfermiza aún me tienta hoy.
Pero también he descubierto algo inesperado junto a ese sombrío pasado y ese peligro actual: la cura para la introspección excesiva no consiste simplemente en menospreciarse a sí mismo, sino en pensar mejor sobre uno mismo. Sí, el autoexamen puede convertirse en una celda de introspección pesimista, pero no tiene por qué ser así. Si se hace bien, el autoexamen puede convertirse en un camino hacia la salud espiritual, en un amigo que nos guía desde el interior para reflejarse aún más en el aspecto exterior, que nos ayuda a conocernos mejor a nosotros mismos y así poder conocer mejor a Cristo.
Escudríñame, oh Dios
Algunos se preguntarán por qué debemos analizarnos a nosotros mismos. Si Dios nos transforma al conocer a Cristo (2 Corintios 3:18), ¿por qué habríamos de dedicar tiempo a conocernos a nosotros mismos? Cambiamos por el aspecto exterior, no por el interior, ¿verdad? Así es. Somos plantas que crecen bajo la lluvia de la adoración sin egoísmo, bajo el sol de la alabanza a Cristo. No obstante, incluso las plantas bien regadas y bien iluminadas deben tener cuidado con las espinas. Del mismo modo, el autoexamen no nos hace crecer por sí solo, pero puede despejar el terreno para el crecimiento y evitar que nos estanquemos.
En las Escrituras, los santos que gozan de buena salud miran mucho hacia el exterior, pero no sólo hacia el exterior. Al igual que Timoteo, no solo prestan atención al Evangelio, sino también a sí mismos (1 Timoteo 4:16). Como a David, les encanta contemplar la gloria de Dios en el cielo y en las Escrituras, pero también permiten que esa gloria ilumine al yo (Salmo 19:11-14). Como exhorta el autor de Hebreos, dedican la mayor parte de su atención a «fijarse en Jesús», pero de vez en cuando también reflexionan sobre los obstáculos y pecados que impiden su progreso (Hebreos 12:1-2).
Los sabios saben que el progreso espiritual de ayer no garantiza el progreso espiritual de hoy. Los Judas se convierten en traidores y los Demases en mundanos, paso a paso, engañándose a sí mismos. Y, como atestiguan tanto la historia como la experiencia, es muy posible vivir una vida cristiana a medias, solamente dando un fruto diez veces mayor, cuando podríamos dar uno que lo sea cien veces —si tan solo nos detuviéramos a arrancar las espinas que bloquean nuestro camino.
Sócrates dijo: «La vida no explorada no merece la pena ser vivida». Y añadimos con certeza que el alma no explorada no seguirá viviendo, o cojea en vez de correr.
Cómo examinarse a sí mismo
¿Cómo examinarnos a nosotros mismos sin caer en la introspección? ¿Cómo podemos sacar agua del pozo del alma sin caer en él?
El autoexamen saludable puede adoptar muchas formas, y lo que ayuda a un alma puede ayudar menos a otra. Al igual que con la oración, la lectura de la Biblia y otras disciplinas espirituales, las Escrituras nos dan principios, pero dejan mucho espacio para la interpretación personal. A continuación, les daré algunas recomendaciones básicas para el autoexamen y cómo aplicarlas.
1. Planea examinarte a ti mismo
A menudo, el autoexamen se vuelve enfermizo cuando pasa de ser una práctica espiritual a convertirse en una obsesión: una vaga nube de condena que te persigue, una sensación agobiante de acomplejamiento.
La Escritura nunca aconseja mirar hacia el interior de forma tan continua. La vida de un santo es una vida sin egoísmo, orientada hacia Dios y hacia los demás. «Amar a Dios» y «amar al prójimo» son las dos prioridades de nuestros días (Mateo 22:37-39); «examinarse a sí mismo» es una práctica hecha para servir a los amores más grandes. Y, por extraño que parezca, una forma de retomar el hábito saludable del autoexamen consiste en dedicarle un espacio reflexivo y bien definido en nuestra agenda. En lugar de juzgarte a ti mismo continuamente, planea examinarte.
Dicho plan incluirá un cuándo concreto. A lo largo de la historia de la Iglesia, muchos santos se han beneficiado de un tiempo breve de autoexamen cada noche, unos minutos en los que podemos recordar las misericordias del día y confesar nuestros pecados. Para mejorar en la práctica del autoexamen, especialmente para aquellos propensos al exceso, podría sugerir algo un poco más largo, pero menos frecuente, por ejemplo, una vez a la semana (en lugar de dedicar un tiempo normal a la oración).
El qué es tan importante como el cuándo. ¿Dónde centrarás tu atención? «Examinarse a uno mismo» supone una carga demasiado grande para la mayoría de nosotros. Pero «examinar tu vida de oración», «examinar tus amistades», «examinar tu forma de criar a los hijos», «examinar tu relación con el dinero» ...a estos sí que podemos echarles mano.
Me parece útil pensar en dos categorías amplias para el autoexamen: los llamados y las preocupaciones. Por llamados me refiero a las áreas de responsabilidad que Dios te ha dado: discípulo de Jesús, esposo o esposa, madre o padre, miembro de la iglesia, amigo, vecino, empleado, etcétera.
Y por preocupaciones me refiero a aquellas áreas de tu alma que requieren una atención cuidadosa. Digamos, por ejemplo, que sientes una picazón de envidia un martes por la tarde en el trabajo. Confiesas sentir envidia, pero en ese momento no tienes tiempo para sumergirte en sus profundidades, o tal vez ni siquiera lo tengas durante un día entero, aunque sientes que hacerlo sería útil. ¿Por qué sentí eso? ¿De dónde ha salido eso? Tener un plan de autoexamen te permite decir: «No estoy seguro, pero no necesito averiguarlo ahora». Volveré a ello el viernes, o cuando lo tengas previsto.
2. Deja que la palabra de Dios te guíe
Así que ahí estás el viernes por la mañana (o cuando sea), con tiempo reservado para el autoexamen. ¿Cómo podría ser ese momento? Podríamos inspirarnos en la oración de David en el Salmo 139:23-24:
Examíname, oh Dios, y conoce mi corazón;
Pruébame y conoce mis pensamientos;
Y ve si hay en mí camino de perversidad,
Y guíame en el camino eterno.
David sabe que aquel que escudriña los corazones sabe cuál es el sentir del Espíritu, porque El intercede por los santos conforme a la voluntad de Dios. Así que, en lugar de sumergirse en su propia alma sin ayuda, pide a Dios mismo que le escudriñe. Sin embargo, David no se limita a pedir a Dios que lo escudriñe, sino que se pone en presencia de ese Dios escudriñador. La mayor parte del Salmo 139 recorre las profundidades de Dios, no del yo. David se asombra ante los pensamientos omniscientes de Dios, los ojos de Dios que todo lo ven, la presencia de Dios que todo lo abarca, la justicia de Dios que todo lo consume. Y entonces, en el contexto de esta profunda divinidad, David dice: «Escudríñame».
El Salmo 139 (y el resto de la Escritura) ofrece un enfoque decididamente asimétrico al autoexamen: solo nos vemos correctamente en relación con Dios. Así pues, si quieres examinarte bien, haz lo mismo que David y ponte en presencia de Dios. En la práctica, al examinarte, permite que la adoración desempeñe un papel tan importante como la confesión. Y a lo largo del camino, trata la palabra de Dios como tu mejor guía: la palabra dada para nuestra reprensión y corrección (2 Timoteo 3:16), la única palabra que puede discernir el corazón (Hebreos 4:12).
Para ello, considere la posibilidad de elegir un pasaje relevante para su enfoque actual y utilizarlo como un camino hacia el alma. Si quieres examinar tu vida de oración, detente en el Padre Nuestro. Si quieres examinar tu manera de ser esposo, mírate en el espejo de Efesios 5:22-33. Si quieres superar algún empujón persistente hacia la amargura, recorre lentamente el Salmo 37 o el 73. Y mientras lo haces, pide a Dios mismo que te escudriñe.
3. Consulta tu alma y confiesa tus pecados
Podemos volver a la oración de David para intensificar nuestro examen de conciencia. Cuando le pide a Dios que lo escudriñe, no le pide que le revele todo sobre él. Pero le pide lo siguiente: «Y ve si en mi camino hay algo malo», algún pecado desconocido o que se conozca a medias, cualquier falta de fe profunda, cualquier comportamiento que pudiera prevenir que siga «el camino eterno» (Salmo 139:24).
Del mismo modo, no necesitamos tratar el autoexamen como una práctica agotadora. No podemos saberlo todo sobre nosotros mismos, ni siquiera todo lo que se debe saber sobre una parte en particular de nosotros. Por muy conscientes que lleguemos a ser de nosotros mismos, moriremos conociéndonos, igual que conocemos a Dios, solo «en parte» (1 Corintios 13:12). Pero sí debemos enfocarnos en cualquier cosa que necesite nuestra atención: cualquier brote venenoso que pueda convertirse en un pecado grave.
Cuando meditemos sobre un pasaje, podemos encontrar ayuda haciéndonos preguntas como las siguientes (extraídas de la página 148 del libro Prayer de Tim Keller):

Si esas preguntas revelan pecados que hemos tolerado, hábitos que debemos abandonar, compromisos sutiles que han ido creciendo con el tiempo, bien: nuestro autoexamen está dando resultados. Hace una hora, algo inquietante yacía oculto en mi alma; ahora ya no. Ahora podemos tomarla, ponerla ante el Señor que nos conoce exhaustivamente y nos ama eternamente, y diga la oración de David,
Te manifesté mi pecado,
y no encubrí mi iniquidad.
Dije: Confesaré mis transgresiones al Señor;
y tú perdonaste la culpa de mi pecado. (Salmo 32:5)
4. Olvídate de ti mismo
El autoexamen, como el buceo en aguas profundas, es un ejercicio bueno, pero solo en ocasiones. Dios no nos ha dado luz ni oxígeno suficientes para nadar siempre en las profundidades; el sol, el aire y la tierra nos esperan arriba. Así que, una vez que hayas interrogado a tu alma y confesado los pecados que hayas visto, vuelve a la superficie.
El acrónimo de la oración A.C.T.S. (Adoración, Confesión, Agradecimiento y Plegaria) coloca el agradecimiento después de la confesión por una buena razón: en Cristo, la confesión de los pecados no es un muro, sino un camino, y no es una habitación, sino una puerta. Dios no quiere que nos quedemos en un sótano amargados por sentimientos de culpa; quiere que cantemos bajo el cielo azul de su bondad y caminemos por los amplios campos de su gracia, su amor inquebrantable, nuestra atmósfera (Salmo 32:10). Por lo tanto, si el autoexamen no nos lleva regularmente a un sabor más pleno, profundo y dulce de la gracia de Dios en Jesús, entonces el autoexamen ha ido mal.
El fin del autoexamen no es la autoconciencia, sino la conciencia de Cristo. Sí, hemos escrutado nuestras almas durante un tiempo, pero solo para poder llevar nuestros pecados a Cristo y recibir su fuerza para andar por un camino mejor. El último paso del autoexamen es el siguiente: olvídate de ti mismo. Ve y ama a tu Dios. Ve y ama a las personas que Él ha puesto ante ti Ve por «el camino eterno» (Salmo 139:24).
