- "Le brise-vent est un obstacle que l'on place au travers du vent pour réduire sa vitesse. Pratiquement, on distingue deux grands types de brise-vent : les brise-vent inertes, communément appelés brise-vent artificiels, et les brise-
vent vivants appelés aussi haies brise-vent ou brise-vent naturels. Les brise-vent inertes sont constitués de bois, de matière plastique ou d'autres matériaux synthétiques.
Leur coût élevé (entre 1 300 et 8 000$/km, pour une hauteur de 1,2 à 1,6 m) et leur durée de vie (de 1 à 7 ans)1 restreignent leur utilisation à la protection de cultures horticoles très rentables ou à la protection de petites
surfaces tels les cours d'exercice des bovins de boucherie.
Les haies brise-vent sont beaucoup plus répandues que les brise-vent artificiels. Les haies sont généralement plus durables, plus esthétiques et plus économiques. De plus, leur hauteur supérieure confère une protection sur une plus grande distance. Les végétaux qui constituent la haie vont toutefois prendre un certain temps avant d’offrir une protection et peuvent compétitionner les cultures pour la lumière, l’eau et les éléments nutritifs.
