| Translation - English Big banks have decreased the number of their branch locations due to their self-centered reasons, such as mergers and corporate restructuring, and the ATM (automated teller machine) in my neighborhood has finally disappeared as a result. In contrast to this trend, what have become increasingly prevalent and convenient in these several years are the ATMs located in convenience stores.
However, while there is no fee charged for a cash withdrawal made during the daytime on a weekday at ATMs of one's own banks, at convenience stores there is a fee of 105 yen for the same transaction, and it jumps to 210 yen during evening hours and weekends. Since I frequently withdraw a small amount at a time in convenience stores, I end up paying about 2000 yen in fees every month. It is really frustrating.

English to Japanese: An open source approach for medical research (part)
Source text - English Can goodwill, aggregated over the internet, produce good medicine? The current approach to drug discovery works up to a point, but it is far from perfect. It is costly to develop medicines and get regulatory approval. The patent system can foreclose new uses or enhancements by outside researchers. And there has to be a consumer willing (or able) to pay for the resulting drugs, in order to justify the cost of drug development. Pharmaceutical companies have little incentive to develop treatments for diseases that particularly afflict the poor, for example, since the people who need such treatments most may not be able to afford them. |
