Source text - Korean 그가 들려준 교리는 대략 이러했다.
태초에 지구는 어떤 생명체도 살지 않는 진 땅과 빈 바다를 가진 행성이었다고 한다. 그렇게 40억 년을 존재하다가, 어느날! 과학기술로 못 하는 게 없는 안드로메다 은하의 오타리아 행성에 사는 외계인들이 고도의 과학을 자기 행성 안에서만 누리는 데에 질려서, 자기들 말고 다른 생물을 ‘창조’해 보기로 결심했단다. 인간의 예술처럼 잉여 시간을 때울 재밌는 유흥거리가 필요했던 거다. 그래도 나름 생명의 창조라는 신성한 업무인지라, 자기 행성의 작은 동물들부터 차근차근 복제하고 또 ‘특유의 우수한 예술적 감각으로’ 새로 디자인한 동물들도 창조해 냈다. (이 부분에서 나는 ‘그렇게 우월한 예술 감각으로 만든 게 지구 생물들인데 세상에는 왜 바퀴벌레가 존재하는지’에 대해 묻고 싶었으나 그걸 묻기에는 그의 이두박근 쪽 피부가 가진 촉감이 너무 보드라워서 더 누워 있고 싶은 사심이 내 목구멍을 압도했다는 것을 밝히고 싶다.) 오타리아의 외계인들이 동물을 만드는 방식은 ‘지극히 과학적이고 완벽한’ 지적 설계의 방식이었다. 생물의 모습을 정해 놓고 모형을 만든 뒤에, 그 생물의 유전자를 추출해서 모양을 갖춰 세상에 나오도록 지적 설계를 해 놓았다는 것이다. 굳이 왜 그렇게 복잡한 방법을 써 가며 뭔가를 만들어야 하는지 이유는 알 수 없지만 아무튼 그렇댄다. 그러다가 그들에게 도전 의식이 생겼는데, 도전 과제는 자신들을 닮은 ‘인간’들을 창조하는 것이었다. 인간을 창조해도 좋을지에 대한 찬반 의견이 오타리아 행성 내에서 상당히 팽팽하게 대립했다고 한다. 결국 찬성 측이 승리해서, 그가 말하길 “우리와 닮은 존재를 만들되 우리보다 더 아름답게 만들자.”라는 주장이 힘을 얻어 최고의 과학자들이 인간을 아주 정교하게, 정성 들여서 디자인하고 설계했다고 한다. 하지만 막상 만들고 나니 왠지 생태계가 교란될 것 같아서 창조된 생물들과 인간들을 다른 행성으로 멀리 보내기로 했고, 그 결과 낙점된 곳이 지구이며 그러므로 이 지구 속 모든 생물들의 창조주는 오타리아의 외계인들이라는 것이다….
“아니 굳이 그런 정성을 들여서까지 만든 거였어? 그렇게 정성 들인 것치고 이 세상은 너무 막장이잖아?”
“그것은 인간의 의식이 아직 창조주 외계인들만큼 성숙하지 못했기 때문이야. 그래서~ 오타리아의 과학자들은 특별히! 우리 인간들에게 창조주로부터의 메시지를 전달하기 위해 대사들을 파견해서 지구에서 가장 지혜롭고 깨달은 인간에게 우리와의 가교 역할을 맡겼다. 그게 바로… 우리 오타리안 무브먼트의 가장 깨달은 자, 우리의 지도자 ‘무슈 오터튼 (Monsieur Otterton)’, 퍼실론 푸실롱 (Fursealon Furililon’님이시지!”
알아. 중학교 때 신문 해외 토픽란에서 본 적 있어. 마치 수컷 북방물개의 가슴털처럼 턱수염을 길고 북실북실하게 기른 뚱뚱한 프랑스 아저씨. “아마존의 청정한 기운과 오타리안의 과학기술을 합쳐서 인류의 시조인 아담과 이브를 되살리겠다.”라고 주장하면서 브라질의 리우데자네이루에서 대규모 설교회를 하려다가 브라질 정부로부터 입국 금지를 당하셨다는 뉴스가 진짜 압권이었거든. 입국 금지 사유도 하필이면 ‘혹세무민’이었다지? 그 말을 들은 오터튼 교주가, 아무리 예언자는 고향 땅에서 환영받지 못한다지만 아마존 강을 마음의 고향으로 삼는 저에게 이러실 수 있냐고 공식 성명까지 내면서 브라질 정부에 강력하게 항의했다는 후일담까지 기사화되었는데, 정말이지 지금까지 토씨 하나 안 틀리고 기억할 정도로 최고로 웃긴 해외 토픽 기사였다니까? 추억 속의 이야기가 웃음과 함께 튀어나오려는 것을 필사적으로 참으며 나는 이놈이 과연 어디까지 신나게 썰을 풀까 궁금한 마음을 온 얼굴로 뿜어냈다.
Translation - English This is more or less what he said.
In the beginning, Earth was a planet of bare earth and empty oceans, completely devoid of life. And so it was for 4 billion years. Meanwhile, in the Andromeda Galaxy, the residents of the planet Otariia had grown bored of basking in their limitless scientific abilities on their planet alone, until one day, they got it into their heads to try creating an entirely new class of beings. After all, they needed an interesting way to kill some time, much in the same way that humans need art. Still, they were aware that creating new life was a sacred task in and of itself, so they began by methodically cloning small animals from their own planet. From there, they went on to create new animals, employing their “unique and refined sense of aesthetics.” (At this point I wanted to ask, “If life on Earth was created with such superior aesthetics, how do you explain cockroaches?” But the soft skin of his bicep felt so nice that my desire to simply lie there won out, and I swallowed the question.) To make these animals, the Otariians deployed an intelligent design that was “complete scientific perfection.” After settling on a design and making some models, they distilled a sample of their creation’s DNA so its form could be preserved and recreated out in the world. It’s not entirely clear why they had to go about it in such a confusing way, nor why they even needed to make anything in the first place, but that’s just how he explained it to me.
Anyway, after the planning stages were through, all that was left was to create these “humans” in their own image. There were endless rounds of debate on Otariia over whether or not this was actually a good idea. Eventually, the pro-creation side won out, rallying others around the idea that they could make a race of beings similar to themselves but even more beautiful. Thus, the best scientists were recruited to begin the actual design process, which they carried out with the utmost care and precision. However, once they actually made the things, the Otariians feared they might upset the ecosystem, so they decided to send the humans and all their other animal creations to a distant planet. They ended up settling on the planet Earth, and thus, all life on Earth was created by the Otariians.
“Okay, but what makes you think they were so careful and precise? For such an intricately designed world, this planet is pretty screwed up.”
“That’s because human consciousness is still nowhere near as advanced as our Otherworldly Creators’. That’s why, in order to share with humans the story of our creation, the Otariian scientists specially anointed the wisest, most knowledgeable human as their ambassador, hoping to bridge the gap between us. That would be the most enlightened man in the Otariian Movement: our founder Monsieur Fursealon Furililon Otterton!”
I know. Back in middle school, I saw a picture of him in the international section of the newspaper—a fat middle-aged Frenchman with a beard long and shaggy enough to rival a Northern fur seal. He proclaimed that he would combine the pure energy of the Amazon with Otariian technology, thus resurrecting our earliest ancestors, Adam and Eve. The highlight of the story was when, in order to spread the gospel further, he marched down to Rio de Janeiro, only to be denied entry by the Brazilian government. I always wondered what the official reason was for barring him—because he was a “disturber of the peace”? Or an “undesirable person”? The article even went on to explain how, upon receiving this rejection, the Prophet Otterton wrote a strongly-worded letter of complaint to the government of Brazil, saying ‘well, it looks like prophets really aren’t welcome in their hometown, but still how could they do this to him here, in the hometown of his heart?’ I honestly believe that
was the greatest thing ever printed in the international section. It left such an impression on me and made me laugh so hard that I could probably still recite the whole thing. The memory of that story sparked a giggle, which I fought to stifle. I was positively dying to see where on earth this man would take his story next.
