Siracusa da vedere
Ricca di monumenti risalenti a diverse epoche storiche, Siracusa è una terra di meraviglie naturali e architettoniche ed è diventata patrimonio UNESCO dal 2005. Famosa in tutto il mondo per il suo teatro greco, il ricchissimo Parco Archeologico e la pittoresca isola di Ortigia, questa città è sicuramente una delle mete turistiche più gettonate della Sicilia. La costa, inoltre, ricca di aree marine protette, scogliere e spiagge incontaminate, è l’altra punta di diamante di questo territorio perfetto per una vacanza culturale e rilassante.
L’isola di Ortigia è la parte più antica della città e custodisce bellezze storiche e tradizioni.
Attraversato il ponte Umberto, che collega la parte storica al resto della città , si arriva a piazza Pancali dove resterai subito affascinato da un sito culturale di notevole importanza il tempio dorico più antico della Sicilia, il tempio D’Apollo, il monumento è situato nelle vicinanze dell’antico Mercato siracusano oggi utilizzato per eventi culturali e mostre, inoltre troverai nelle vicinanze il tradizionale mercato di Ortigia, passeggiando tra le bancarelle resterai affascinato dai colori e sapori dei numerosi prodotti alimentari tipici siciliani e banchi pieni di pesce fresco del nostro mare.
Entrando nel cuore di Ortigia ad attirare la tua attenzione sarà Piazza Archimede, dedicata allo storico scienziato siracusano di cui la città ne va fiera, qui spicca la Fontana di Diana, una fontana monumentale del 1907.
Continuando il tuo tour arriverai a Piazza Duomo dove maestosa e affascinante si presenta la cattedrale di Siracusa, incorporata in essa l’antico tempio di Atena.
All’interno della cattedrale è custodito l’importante simulacro argenteo della patrona dei siracusani, Santa Lucia, ancora oggi vivi e sentiti i festeggiamenti patronali, dedicati ogni 13 dicembre, alla santa della Luce Spirituale.
Altro importante sito è la Fonte Aretusa, una fonte naturale di acqua dolce che sfocia nel mare siracusano, un ‘antica leggenda di Alfeo e Aretusa è collegata all’affascinante fontana.
Qui troverai vegetazione spontanea dell’antico papiro e l’habitat ideale per pesci papere e anatre.
Ortigia custodisce anche il castello Maniace, uno dei più importanti monumenti del periodo svevo a Siracusa e tra i più noti castelli federiciani.
A parte monumenti storici Ortigia affascina per i suoi vicoli e stradine dove troverai locali, ristoranti, pizzerie, pub e vita mondana, per trascorrere una magica serata.
Affascinanti tramonti sul mare accompagnati da un aperitivo potrai viverli alla Marina di Siracusa, luogo di passeggio e relax.
Siracusa gode del Parco archeologico della Neapolis è un'area naturale colma di reperti archeologici appartenenti a più epoche della storia siracusana. Per la quantità e la rilevanza dei suoi monumenti è considerata una delle zone archeologiche più importanti della Sicilia[3], nonché tra le più vaste del Mediterraneo.
Comprende la parte settentrionale del quartiere della Neapolis (uno dei cinque che componevano Siracusa in età greca e romana), in cui si trovano i monumenti più famosi della città: il teatro greco (databile, nel suo aspetto attuale, al III sec. a.C. ma esistente fin dalla seconda metà del V sec. a.C.), l’anfiteatro romano (di controversa datazione, attribuito da taluni ad Augusto, da altri a Settimio Severo), l’ara di Jerone II (un grandioso altare per i sacrifici pubblici della città) e la Via dei Sepolcri, di impianto ellenistico, profondamente incassata nella roccia e fiancheggiata da ipogei bizantini.
A questo straordinario complesso di monumenti fa da fondale lo scenografico arco delle latomie del Paradiso e di S. Venera: antiche cave di pietra che recano ancora i segni dell’estrazione e in cui si aprono, in una rigogliosa vegetazione di aranci e alberi secolari, suggestive e amplissime grotte, fra cui la Grotta dei Cordari e l’Orecchio di Dionisio.

What to see in Syracuse
Rich in monuments dating back to different historical periods, Syracuse is a land of natural and architectural wonders and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. The city is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sicily, famous throughout the world for its Greek theatre, the rich Archaeological Park, and the picturesque island of Ortigia, the coastline, rich in marine protected areas, cliffs and pristine beaches, is the other hidden secret of Syracuse, a place perfect for a cultural and relaxing holiday.
Ortigia is the oldest part of the city, rich in architectural beauties and traditions.
Walk across the Humbertine Bridge, which connects the old town with the rest of the city, and get to Piazza Pancali where you can admire the Temple of Apollo, one of the most important monuments in Syracuse and the oldest Doric temple in Sicily. The Temple is located a few meters from the Ancient Market of Ortigia, now home to cultural shows and events. The market is colorful and lively and its stands sell the best Sicilian food items and always fresh fish, often caught only a few hours earlier.
Walking through the heart of Ortigia you encounter Piazza Archimede, dedicated to the Greek Archimedes, one of the greatest geniuses in the history of mathematics and physics and also one of Syracuse's most illustrious sons. At the center of the square is the Diana Fountain, a magnificent monument created in 1907.
You then come to Piazza Duomo, dominated by the Cathedral of Syracuse, a beautiful church enclosing the ancient Temple of Athena. The silver statue of Saint Lucy, Syracuse's patron saint, is preserved inside the cathedral and a celebration in her honor is held every year on 13 December. She is celebrated as the Saint of Light and protectress of sight.
Then there is the Fonte Aretusa, a freshwater spring flowing right to the seashore, also associated with a legend regarding the god Alpheus and the nymph Arethusa. Moreover, the papyrus grows spontaneously here and freshwater fish and domesticated ducks swim in the deep water of the spring.
Lastly, there is Maniace's Castle, one of the most important monuments of the Swabian period in Syracuse and one of the most famous Frederick castles.
Besides its monuments, Ortigia is also famous for its narrow streets and alleys lined with clubs, pubs and restaurants where you can spend a magical night. Finally, one can enjoy a beautiful sunset while drinking an aperitif at the “Marina”, a great place to walk and relax.
After visiting Ortigia, you should move to the Archaeological Park of Neapolis, which is a natural area full of archaeological finds belonging to several periods of Syracusan history. For the quantity and relevance of its monuments it is considered one of the most important archaeological areas of Sicily, as well as among the largest in the Mediterranean.
It includes the northern part of the Neapolis district (one of the five that made up Syracuse in the Greek and Roman ages), in which the most famous monuments of the city are found: the Greek theater (datable, in its current aspect, to the III century BC but existing since the second half of the V century BC), the Roman amphitheater (of controversial dating, attributed by some to Augustus, by others to Septimius Severus), the altar of Jerone II (a grandiose altar for the city's public sacrifices ) and the Via dei Sepolcri, of Hellenistic structure, deeply embedded in the rock and flanked by Byzantine hypogeums.
The spectacular arc of the latomie del Paradiso and of S. Venera are the backdrop of this extraordinary complex of monuments.
