I am one of those, who stay up late.
I am one of those who rarely remembers a dream.
But a while ago, I had a dream, I consider it a nightmare actually.
I dreamt, that some people were trying to kidnap me from my own home.
I screamed and asked help from my dead brother.
And this is the first time,
Two years and two months after his death,
That I saw him in my dreams.
I shouted his name, and called for his help.
This dream is always on my mind.
Of course, I will not say his real name.
My title is Um Firas, I am from Syria, from Damascus.
I am 51 years old.
-We are in Jordan, and it is summer 2017.
-We have just become friends with a young man from Syria. His name is Saif.
-Saif was an active part of the Syrian revolution, in his hometown Damascus.
-on this day Saif brings us to SAB, a local center where Syrian youth are treated for their war wounds.

My childhood as I told you, was short.
I didn’t live my childhood, as a childhood.
As I married very young.
I had a lot, because I was the first female grandchild in the family.
I was spoiled by my grandparents.
The thing I remember the most from my childhood is
That I went on a lot of trips with my grandparents.
They went on trips to Jordan,
And they took me with them.
These are the memories that I feel are beautiful from my childhood.
And then the responsibility comes
And when a person starts to have responsibility,
One must leave childhood, and start being responsible.
And I had children.
So we tend to tell traditional stories from our culture.
Children should be taught our traditions, cultures and principles, through stories.
I like to raise children on the basis of love,
That they will love everything around them.
That they should not fear.
And that fear is non-existent in our lives

But at the same time, they should be careful.
That you should not trust everybody.

I had to leave my country, because I was wanted from the secret police.
My journey was five and a half years ago.
I travelled from Syria
My son was wounded,
And I brought him here,
And got him treated in Jordan.
And I left without being able to access my home,
Or bring anything with me.
The way we had to travel,
We couldn’t carry anything with us
We left with only the cloths on our backs.
Just that.
It was the worst day of my life..
And of course, we were crying through the whole journey.
It is really difficult to leave your motherland in that way.
And you can not come back to it.
-there were 655,624 syrian refugees registered in Jordan in December, 2017.

It is important to me,
That I give the place I live in,
A part of my soul.
That I give it some of my love, so I can live feeling safe.

About human rights and freedoms.
It all turned out to be a huge lie.
I was optimistic and had hopes that the conflict would end.
But honestly,

And there was no country left in the world,

They destroyed everything completely.

That I am in complete despair.
Honestly.

The soul.
The pure innocent soul. The truthful soul.

At the end,

One who has this capacity to love,
Is the one who feels inner peace.
I have a feeling of love,
Even towards the people who mistreated me.
I try not to feel hatred towards them.
Or carry any grudges .
Or spite.
No, if you do that,
You will reflect these negative feelings on yourself.
No, you should show them love,
So this feeling reaches them, and they can change.
I don’t like hearing the word “war”.
In my book, love is all that exist.

Y yo tuve que irme sin poder pasar por mi casa,
y sin poder llevarme nada conmigo.
La forma en la que viajábamos,
no nos permitía llevar nada con nosotros;
nos fuimos solamente con algo de ropa encima.
Solo eso.
Fue el peor día de mi vida.
Y claro, lloramos durante todo el viaje.
Fue muy difícil dejar nuestra tierra de esa manera.
Y no puedes volver.

“Guerra” se convierte en “amor”.
“Guerra” para mí significa, destrucción.
En todos los aspectos.
Siginifica matar, destrucción personal,
psicológica, sangre… todo eso.
Para mí es la destrucción de absolutamente todo.
(Saif) ¿Cómo te sentiste cuando ocurrieron los primeros sucesos?
(Saif) Cuando todo empezó.
¡Es una revolución!
Es una revolución; y no “sucesos”.
Una revolución que comenzó como una verdadera revolución;
Una pequeña parte de la población siria la inició.
Aquellos que odiaban y rechazaban la injusticia y la opresión.
La revolución vive dentro de mí.
Y yo fui una de las primeras en tomar parte en ella.
Nuestra revolución era pacifica. Completamente.
El régimen sirio la transformó en un brutal ataque
contra las manifestaciones y los manifestantes.
Se cometieron muchas injusticias
y todo el mundo fue testigo de ello.
Y ahí aprendí que cuando Occidente habla de
derechos humanos y libertades,
en realidad, es todo una gran mentira.
Yo era optimista al principio y tenía la esperanza de que el conflicto terminara.
Pero honestamente,
Después de que la situación se fuese agravando cada vez más
y no quedara ningún país en el mundo
que no hubiese interferido en el conflicto…
Destruyeron absolutamente todo.

Tu viniste a mi casa, vinisteis en grupos;
un montón de grupos vinieron a mi casa.
También vinieron muchos estudiantes cuyos padres y madres
no estaban de acuerdo con que participaran en la revolución.
Vinieron aquellos que tomaron parte en la revolución,
Que no tenían el apoyo de sus padres.
Mi casa estaba abierta.
Yo era la madre de los revolucionarios.
Me decían: ¡“Tu eres nuestra madre”!

Este hijo mío, Ahmad, estaba herido.
Perdió su mano izquierda y dos dedos de la mano derecha.
(Saif) ¿Cómo está él ahora?
Está en Suecia ahora.

En el momento en que le hirieron…
la carne de su mano,
cubrió todo su rostro. Y sus ojos.
Y pensó que había perdido también los ojos.
Él era quien animaba y daba fuerza a los demás;

La serenidad que necesitaron cuando tuvieron que llevar a mi hijo a emergencias en Barze.

Lo llevaron a Barze, a un hospital de campaña.
Allí le dijeron que esto era un hospitalde campaña, que no podían curarlo;
que no podían hacer nada por él.
Lo llevaron entonces a Midan, al hospital de Al Mahaini.
Los revolucionarios fueron allí con él,
Y rodearon el hospital.
Allí le prestaron primeros auxilios.
Para poder parar la hemorragia.
Después lo llevaron otra vez a Barze, y lo escondieron allí durante una semana.
El régimen atacó toda la zona.
Y se lo llevaron a otro sitio.
Pero entonces el régimen atacó de nuevo.
Y lo llevaron a Midan.
En ese momento, yo ya no supe nada de lo que estaba ocurriendo.
