Hell, no! Jun 11

I have no interest whatsoever in AI and anyway a growing number of my clients have now expressly forbidden the use of any AI software…

Yes as an individual user, not a corporation Jun 12

I think that really useful AI services need massive input, lot of various questions, etc. If such services charge a symbolic amount, I would try to find some pennies on that

Where to start? Jun 12

Some points:

1. Some AI services are already charged for explicitly, as opposed to indirectly (see below).

2. I might be willing to pay a fee for some AI services, but not for others.

3. The most likely future business model will have AI services costed in as part of a package - as, for example, the new iPhone. Others, such as medical applications, will eventually find their way into health care budgets. So we'll end up paying for them, willing or not.

4. There are a few AI applications I would pay to avoid. For example, having a spy in my home, listening in to conversations, keeping track of my on-line viewing and buying habits, and sending the information back to its owner. Nevertheless, apparently hundreds of millions of people have already paid for this kind of Big Brother monitoring. Bizarre.

AI Jun 12

I'm paying for DeepL, which is a form of AI. I'm paying for it because it helps my business. As far as ChatGPT is concerned, I haven't found any professional use for it yet that could be worthwile, so I'm not willing to pay for it (as a matter of fact I don't use it all, not even in my private life). As far as I can see the usefulness of ChatGPT for translators is very questionable, at least for translators that are always working with a CAT tool.

In a few years, they will look back and laugh at themselves Jun 12

AI is unstoppable, and is going to transform translation, whether we like it or not. In a few years, anyone who said they'll never use it, or prohibited it, will be laughing at themselves for the Luddites they were : )

Well, we already are, right? Jun 12

I guess there's a form of AI in every MT engine in every CAT, so, we already are paying for it, right?

Of course, I don't expect to receive valuable services for free, and the price I'll pay will, logically, depend on how valuable the technology is to my business

What is meant by "AI"? Jun 12

And how does "AI" charge a fee by itself?

There's no need to insult us.
The type of texts I translate have a creative component and a degree of complexity that AI absolutely cannot handle for the time being. I get plenty of compliments about my work. So I'm just going to continue as I am.
I won't be using AI in a few years, I'll be retired, so I'll be laughing at things (not people) that are truly funny instead.

When I work with a CAT tool, it's the agency who lends me a licence, and I see that the PMs systematically turn off the MT options (maybe because I refuse to do PEMT, I'm not allowed to use it if I'm being paid a proper fee for proper translation?)

And languages will have transformed into easily digestible food for AI Jun 12

From the living organisms they were, each capable of expressing genius ideas in its own unique way. I've seen people actively or passively ruin languages, probably seeking to make each one a mediocrity optimized for mediocre communications. If you're in the middle of a global process, you tend to think it's there to last for ever with no counteraction from people who don't like where it's going. Wrong. There's always a counteraction (unless we're on the brink of death). It's a pendulum, not a one-way ticket.

P. S.: I'm not seeing AI transform anything that has to do with translation in my language pair and my subject areas. So, it would be great to have more specific details about the "few years" thing. Maybe there's some inside information in it

In a few years maybe. But not now. It’s still utterly useless at a professional level.

There are types of translation and translator who can save time with it today, I’m sure, but I fear you’re digging your own graves by doing so.

Canny translators, if capable enough, will not be settling for packing biscuits in the translation factory but actively cultivating clients in niches that AI will not be able to compete with for a long time, if ever.

No offense intended

I laugh at MYSELF for not using MT earlier. I was also late getting a computer, a cell phone, etc.

If you're able to do all ultra-creative stuff, hats off. Yes, it's probably useless for that. For now ... ; )
