Something else May 31

Over the years I have worked for some high-level international organizations and if this turned up to be more regular it would really be a dream come true. I love variety, so I can’t select just one field but I like projects related to development in underdeveloped countries, migration, human rights, labour rights, racism, sexism, discrimination…

Wait, I've done all of these! May 31

Yay to me hahaha

OK, not the bestselling novel, but I've written one that might be a best-seller one day!

Any text that doesn't mainly consist of very short sentences or bullet points is a dream translation project to me.

I've already had the chance to subtitle tv shows and performing QC on movies for some of the main streaming platforms around, but my dream job would be being able to subtitle a movie made by one of my fave directors or actors. That would definitely make my day.

old curiosities May 31

I almost went for "translating a bestselling novel", but the bestselling part bugs me. My natural inclination would be to translate weird old texts, whether literary or non-fiction. I recently did a couple of pages from an obscure 1880s French instruction manual about how to build a modern hygenic dairy, and getting the vocabulary and archaic tone right was most absorbing.

I've also set myself the pointless task of translating Fernando Pessoa's static drama "O Marinheiro", a text that ties itself in knots with a view to puzzling the reader. I'm not sure it's possible to make anything other than a puzzling tangle of a translation, plus the world doesn't need my version of it, plus I'm actually supposed to be creating a viable freelance career for myself. So I shouldn't be messing with Pessoa. But like I say, I'm drawn to weird texts.

I thought Keki & Associates were already living the dream?

My dream project right now is a file that hasn't been converted from PDF.

Yes, we was making a killing, but then those threads about scammers started to pop up all of a sudden, and the business took a nosedive.. They had to go and shout from the rooftops about gmail accounts, IBAN and Whatsapp numbers... we had a good thing going, god damn it!

anything regular May 31

After a very meagre week - certainly the worst since Covid - I'd be glad to have regular jobs of any kind!
Not even a miserable weekend job on the horizon, what am I going to do until Monday?

Translating a bestselling novel
I'd love to do this. Even better, I'd love to translate an average novel, and see my translation become a best-seller.

My "something else"
Documentation for museums, art galleries, artists, musicians, record labels.
My dream translations, that I really need to be getting on with now!

My "something else"
Documentation for museums, art galleries, artists, musicians, record labels.
My dream translations, that I really need to be getting on with now!

Translating a historic speech or document
I find history fascinating so this is definitely a "hell yeah!!"
I do the occasional historic document, a description of a medieval map of the world recently, which was fascinating, and I've done lots of translations about cathedrals, monasteries and châteaux. I did a translation about medieval architecture in a village the east of France, where my obscure A level specialisation in Hapsburg Europe actually proved useful for once! There was a glaring mistake in the French text, which I picked up on because I remembered Miss Pearson explaining that people often made that mistake.

Translating cutting-edge scientific research
I have done this on occasion: I recently did a translation about Extended Reality (VR+AR) which was fascinating. Not the hard-core scientific data, a press release to explain it to the general public.

Translating travel guides & tourism material
I often do this, if it's about places of interest, it's wonderful. If it's about the services available at the spa and courtesy shampoo, at least I can do it quickly.

Localizing a popular video game
Never have, if it's not too nerdy or violent it could be fun.

Localizing an educational app or software
I've already done this. It pays the bills

Working on international law documents
oooh no

None. I don't have a "dream" translation project, for me that word is too strong to describe any translation project.

That’s so sad. Maybe you should try a different job?

Games Jun 1

I'm actually doing this for a popular mobile game now. What really inspires me to pursue more into translation might be Elden Ring. The game has some of the best localization that I know of. I want to work on more games and want to make this pay the bills.
