I’m quite happy with some of my specialization areas, but one of the things I like about translation is that we are always learning. I wouldn't say I'm specialized in medicine, but over the years I gained experience in certain medical areas and I’d like to learn more. I also would like to get a better understanding of the interdependent nature of all the parts and pieces related to environmental science (global warming, climate changes, rainfall, droughts, floods, heat waves, etc.). The problem has been simply that either I haven’t enough time or the last thing I want to do on my free time is… work.Collapse

I am very comfortable with my existing specializations with the odd foray into lesser-known fields. In my experience, if you specialize in IT, you are going to get a bit of pretty much everything at some point. And frankly, what little I get to see of medical stuff first-hand, it's too intimidating for me to even try specializing in it.

Specialisation on the go May 26

I started out in 1998 with no specialization apart from literature since that had always been my interest growing up and I was on a PhD program at Princeton before dropping out with an M.A. But whenever I was offered work in medicine, law, finance, IT, marketing etc. I just took it on and did my research. I can now say that I "specialize" in all these fields and can take on anything else I'm offered.

F... that - I have enough on my plate as it is. More learning for this profession after learning languages from the age of 12, studying languages, working in-house, nearly 20 years of experience... jeepers. The specialisations I have are enough and I spend long enough working.

Bring on the summer and open pools and reading and lying on the grass...

I'm very happy with my specialist subjects of art music history fashion textiles.

I would love to do more translations on food and nutrition, health and the environment,

Dear Kay, you may be an expert in the areas you've stated, but clearly your expertise does not extend to the use of punctuation marks! Where are the commas between the words 'art', 'music', 'history', 'fashion' and 'textiles'? And why on earth would you end a sentence with a comma, instead of a full stop? I guess you were too busy inspecting your teacher's broomstick when you were supposed to pay attention to these things!
Don't you know this forum is constantly being checked and pored over by potential clients? You might find yourself blacklisted along with George if you're not too careful! Your jaunts into the dog park will get you only so far!

I am not a field already May 27

Nor do I want to be a field.

PS Doing a few translations in a field does neither a specialist nor an expert make. Maybe a scarecrow though.
