Dear Colleagues,
A couple of weeks ago I asked my Hungarian colleagues whether they could recommend me online tools to convert PDF into Word. Then someone mentioned that I just should send the pdf to [email protected], with the language of the document in the email subject. And that 2 minutes later, hey presto! I'd get the converted document by email.

I thought that the service just counted the words in the submitted document. Does it convert pdf files to word files to boot?

Hmm. Well you give them a document and your e-mail address. But they promise to be nice:Confidentiality: As always, all data received by Wordfast on your behalf is kept strictly confidential. I've just tried to see how it works - it's phantastic, the word document (out of a french pdf) - with lists and charts - is perfect.

Or is it just a free service that works marvellously?
To be honest, when posting this topic, my aim was to get answers to this question too.
But I hope that other colleagues will also find it useful.

Mark, thanks for your input, I had the same thoughts. I would've needed this service for another document, but as it was a confidential thing, I decided not to. Now I am translating an article that was published months ago, so no such worries there.
As for my email address - it's public anyway.

I did a WF training session last December with Yves Champollion who is the founder (and the mind) of the Wordfast family. He told us about Skydrive (Microsoft), Google Drive, Dropbox and the likes and seemed to be very wary about possible leaks using those tools. So it seems to me that he wouldn't allow his tools to do just what he fears from other tools.

I just tried it out on a PDF I had to convert for a recent job.
While the results are not bad, they are far from perfect. If you are skilled at using ABBYY FineReader to convert your PDFs, and know about spurious line breaks, etc., and the possible effects these things can have later on in your CAT tool (sentences getting cut off at seemingly random places) . . . I would say this is a pretty good way of converting your PDFs.

I wouldn't really worry about confidentiality. You are probably already breaching as many NDAs by just using Gmail as you would by sending your document to Wordfast's servers.

I sent a rather complicated pdf with different text colors and lots of images, two column text and additions, and it turned out perfect. From now on Abbyy Finereader is out.
The bad news is that nowadays I hardly ever need pdf conversion, since one customer went over to use Studio and SDL Wordserver, where the files are already converted to sdlxliff.
After loading the docx-file into Studio 2011 most of the segments were recognized as 100% matches, though originally I translate...
