It is very sad that Proz is quickly turning into a marketplace for scams and low paying jobs. Maybe they should find a way to filter these offers.

I think we should be careful here to get our facts straight: do we know for sure that Giulia's original job request was in fact a 'job advertised on ProZ.com'? It sounds more like a private e-mail request, simply sent via the ProZ.com e-mail service.
This would be a rather different state of affairs!
If we choose to accept e-mails via our profile page, then we have to accept that we may receive all kinds of e-mails, including spam and scams; naturally, ProZ.com will take every step to block spamming addresses or IPs at source, but of course, this can only be a re-active step, not a pro-active one. Every spammer we report helps the ProZ system to avoid other people getting messages from the same source. However, it would clearly be unreasonable (and unfeasible!) to expect all incoming e-mail to your profile to be manually checked! (though members do have the facility to accept vetted e-mails only)
However, you can configure your e-mails so that, for example, you will only receive messages from logged-in users; this will of course help to filter out almost all spam — but you might also end up losing the odd message here and there from potential customers who just don't happen to be logged-in users of ProZ.com; this is a trade-off you have to make, deciding which works best for you. Personally, I accept all mail (which might be from a prospective customer), relying on my own instincts to readily assess incoming scams.
Let's not confuse this issue with the ProZ.com JOBS system, where clearly there is a great deal more protection, in terms of who can post jobs, and it is easier for them to be vetted.
I don't think we can expect ProZ to expend vast resources to 'nanny' us, when a few simple checks and safeguards are all each of us need put in place to avoid such things; frankly, most of the scams are SO obvious, I find it quite amazing that anyone is gullible enough to be taken in by them.
PS: OK, thanks a lot Giulia for explaining the situation better; I now understand, since the text you quoted sounds much more like the e-mail that lots of people have received; you didn't say it was the reply following an answer to a job posting. I assume you did alert site staff to the bogus job posting? If not, you should certainly do so now, even if the original posting can no longer be found, you should give them as much info as you possibly can so they can try and identify it.

This is clearly a scam, but apparently it was sent by email, right ? It is quite common.
Anyway, be careful because on Proz too, some posts for jobs are scams !! I have seen and warn Proz about one a few weeks ago. The announcer said he was a man working in the business area and needing a translation of big document. There was no details, and the name was in fact a women name, and when I searched for it in Google... it was the name of a yoga teacher ! and the email was almost the same as ... Actually it was a job advertized on Proz, not an e-mail sent me through proz. It is steen visible among other jobs but now is closed because quoting deadline has expired. I quoted for it as I quote for other jobs and I got the reply I wrote above.

or a very similar misadventure happened to me too (I seem to remember it was the "handicapped businessman" scam attempt).

Well, I received a quite similar reply. The only difference is that there he asks to let him know the total charges instead of accepting a proposal. Together with the email I got a short text sample in German (business management field). It doesn't look like MT but it sounds a little strange.
He was looking for German>Italian translators, and in the email it went English>German. Furthermore I wrote him in German, since I am bilingual, and he answered in English.
Last but not least, I have checked the IP address - the last "received from" line: 197.111.190.252
It comes from South Africa. Wasn't he actually in Spain?  ▲ Collapse

I actually wasn't sceptical at all until we came to the payment. He/She wanted to pay with traveller's cheques, which I found slightly suspicious.

After a few exchanges of emails and telephone contacts (although I never provided my address), this person offered to pay the full amount in advance and asked for my address where he could post a cheque. At that point, I became very suspicious, did a search online and found out that this is a common scam. Basically, they send you a cheque with an amount that is much higher than the one you agreed as a deposit or advance payment. When you get in touch with them explaining that the amount is not correct, they say they made a mistake and ask you to transfer back the amount in excess to a current account. Although the cheque looks pretty genuine, it is a counterfeit cheque but the bank can only find out after several days from the moment you deposit it. By then, if you fall into the trap, you have already sent the excess money to this bank account and never hear from this person ever again.
