memoQ translator pro: created by translators for translators!

memoQ translator pro is a computer-assisted translation tool which runs on Microsoft Windows and on Mac using Parallels or VMWareFusion. It was envisioned more than 12 years ago by a group of enthusiastic linguists who aimed to develop innovative translation software which increases translator's productivity while being easy to learn and use.

Translation memory

memoQ features a state of the art translation memory which stores your translations and helps you reuse them. The translation memory boosts productivity and consistency throughout your project. With a translation memory in place you will never need to translate the same thing twice.

Term base

memoQ posses an advanced term base for handling terminology. With it, you can extract terms from files and translation memories, import your existing glossaries, combine bilingual glossaries into multilingual ones, or easily add new terminology as you translate.

The Muse

Muses offer automatic suggestions for target terms as you type. Muses are “trained” by analyzing content that is available from your translation memories and LiveDocs corpora. The more content available, the more precise and personalized the suggestions will be.

LiveDocs

LiveDocs is the best example of features in memoQ that speed up work. It is an alternative to translation memories which keeps your translation content structured and organized. It allows for the reuse of previous material based on the entire corpus rather than segments. This is the technology that makes memoQ, the CAT tool of choice for thousands of translators around the world.

5 out of 5 memoQ is fantastic, an intuitive tool that solves problems!
Review by
two2tango I have been using CAT tools for about 10 years and have used Wordfast, Trados 2007, Studio 2009, SDLX, Mneme, Deja Vu and Across. memoQ surpasses them all, from the installation which is automatic, to updates, to technical support to its webinars and resource center to its great features (LiveDocs!) and ease of use in general.
I recommend my colleagues to download a memoQ trial version and I am sure they will fall for it.

5 out of 5 Hands down the best CAT tool today.
Review by
Michael Beijer I'll keep this short.

I have tried the old and the new Trados (Workbench/TagEditor + Studio 2011), Wordfast, Fluency, Across, Déjà Vu X2, and a few other ones, and memoQ is by far the CAT tool that just works. It stays out of your way and lets you translate. It is also rock solid. I have yet to mess up a job due to a file that won't export or a crash.

The other main reason why I prefer it is its amazing support, and the lively community in the memoQ mailing list. There is always someone who will answer any question you might have – either from Kilgray Support, or a colleague on the mailing list – even on Sunday night! If you plan on using memoQ, or just want to find out more about it, make sure to join: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/memoQ/

How easy is it to learn?

mature, powerful, versatile
Review by
Gyula Erdesz . A universal tool for freelance translators who work with different native file formats and handle more complex translation assignments.

Its power and speed is truly amazing: it does handle huge (>10 000 segments) proprietary .xliff files better and faster than their native software.

Support, which is included in the yearly fee, is always responsive and willing to help with the goofiest problems. A true advantage if you face a technical problem and the deadline is tight.

How easy is it to learn?

An absolute disaster, would not touch it with a pole
Review by
Freimanis . An absolute disaster, would not touch it with a pole. First I underwent a crash training arranged but the client and everything seemed fine. But then I had to use the client-provided online version for a rush project : no workable options for saving the job online, the program stalled and as a result the translated or changed segments were not delivered to the client properly. There seems to be only one option of ‘securily’ saving the document – sending the final online copy to the client. When you get to that stage and want to deliver the final version, this is not possible due to ‘unconfirmed segments’ – a message comes up without specifying which segments, no filters to track the unconfirmed segments down, so you go through the whole documents with a ‘jump’ tool which seems to skip more than jump because the same message about ‘unconfirmed’ segments keeps coming up and you still cannot deliver the document.

The screen is overcrowded, tons of irrelevant comments in the QA stage based on the source text which have to be read/ticked to proceed and satisfy the client’s curiosity about POSSIBLE mistakes and deviations from the TM and TB. The ‘mistakes’ are based on the TM or TB where only one form of a particular word is available. So the QA part of the program is heavily biased towards the source text (English). This has no relevance for inflexional target languages where a noun can have, for example, up to 7 cases and at least 5 different endings! But this seems to be part of high-tech QA trend where the source text takes the driving seat but the translator has take the passenger seat and pay the hefty taxi fee of a wayward cab.

How easy is it to learn?

best CAT ever, intuituve, easy to learn, fun to use
Review by
Valerij Tomarenko . The comparison reminds me of the old Microsoft vs. Apple controversies. There used to be the good, the bad and the ugly (programmes). Those days are long gone. It would be wrong to still claim Trados is a necessary evil. Today's SDL Studio has gone a long way to improvement, even if it still preserves its Microsoft-ish character - heavy, stolid, slow, and cumbersome in many respects. Across is certainly unequalled in terms of ugliness. In contrast, MemoQ is fast, intuitive, fun to use. It was created for those fed up with the usual discomforts of having to use a CAT tool. Remember how Apple used to be cool and fun. It was THE tool to create and design. If are a serious translator, who also enjoys what you're doing, MemoQ is THE tool for you. Five stars.
