English to Greek: Ya-Ya and the Goldfish General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English I spent my time at Ya Ya’s wondering what this place might have been before someone got the cruel idea to rent it out as an apartment. The dark, stifling hallway had been miscast in the role of a kitchen, and the bathroom looked suspiciously like a
closet.
I recall one visit when Ya Ya carried on about her recently deceased pet, a common goldfish she kept in a murky jar up on the apartment’s only window ledge. She had returned from work and, finding the jar empty, decided that the fish had consciously thrown itself out the window.
“He no happy no more and think to have a suicide,” she said.
“Commit,” my mother said. “ He committed suicide. You don’t have a suicide. It has you.”
“Okay,” Ya Ya said. “But why he have the suicide? Is pretty, the fish. Why he want to take he life away?”
“You’re asking why?” My mother lowered her sunglasses. “Open your eyes and take a lucky guess.” She emptied the jar into the sink. “This place is a dump.”
“What Sharon means,” my father said, “is that a fish is incapable of thinking in those terms. They have tiny little kaphalis and don’t get depressed.”

Translation - English However, Sturdza handles this matter with greater caution and responsibility. Probably taking into account English genealogical dictionaries, he describes the man as an English captain called William Brown, who was shipwrecked off Cephalonia in 1490. I believe that the existence of this family founder cannot be disputed, but his noble status is a later, deliberate invention created by some of his ancestors. The surname “Egglezos” that his ancestors inherited poses problems of its own. He appears as “Gklesis” in the documents of Livathos’ notary, Nikolaos Romanos, in 1570, as “Klezis” in the documents of Andreas Mavroioannis, who was also notary of Livathos, in 1571, as “Engglezi(s)” (“Englesi”) in the book of the cittadini belonging to the island’s Community in 1539, and as “Ougglesi” in Corfu, where the family coat of arms depicts only a sun and a sword-bearing hand, without the three towers appearing in the Cephalonian version.
Among the notarial references of the 16th century, the one drafted by Stamatis de Montesanto about Ioannis Klesi(s) in 1538 is of particular interest. Here we can only speculate that this is the same Ioannis Klesi(s) who is named citizen of Omala, and not of Livathos, in a 1569 entry by notary Andreas Mavroioannis.
