Source text - English Thousands of other people were at that same
moment running for their lives, marking the soft
ash and wet volcanic mud with footprints of
human desperation that would remain undiscov-
ered for millennia. The people whose footprints
led to the north or northwest chose a path that
probably saved their lives; those who set out to
the east, like the young woman and the older
man, toward the present-day Italian town of
Avellino, unwittingly chose a path that led to cer-
tain death. They headed, by ill luck, smack into
the middle of a fallout zone that would be swiftly
buried under three feet of pumice.
Translation - Danish Tusindvis af andre mennesker løb på samme tid for livet, og i den bløde aske og det våde vulkanske mudder satte de fodspor af menneskelig desperation, som først skulle blive opdaget flere tusind år senere. De mennesker, hvis fodspor førte mod nord eller nordvest, valgte en vej, der sandsynligvis reddede deres liv; dem der løb mod øst, som den unge kvinde og den ældre mand, mod det, der i dag er den italienske by Avellino, valgte uforvarende en vej, som førte til den visse død. De var så uheldige at styre lige ind i midten af den nedfaldszone, der hurtigt skulle blive begravet under et 90 cm tykt lag pimpsten.
