Source text - French “Chaque respiration est un supplice. L’attente, insupportable. L’espace d’un instant, l’homme semble être enfin délivré de son mal, mais au dernier moment, il inspire une longue goulée d’air, comme s’il se noyait.
Skyler garde un œil attentif sur les signes vitaux irréguliers de son patient.
Les Fées s’acharnent sur leur victime cette fois-ci. Elles sont imprévisibles, mais surtout sournoises. À ce stade-ci, elles le raviront une fois pour toutes, en le laissant pénétrer dans leur royaume invisible. C’est un aller simple. D’abord, elles font rêver d’un monde où tout est possible, où le Déluge ne s’est jamais produit. Les visites se font un peu plus longues chaque fois, la séparation avec la réalité davantage difficile. Puis, la descente aux enfers commence.
Se laisser tenter n’a rien de honteux. Skyler aussi voudrait une seconde chance.
Mais les Fées n’existent pas, évidemment.
L’odeur de solvant qui émane du patient donne le signal pour préparer la procédure. Tout doit être prêt avant qu’il ne passe de l’autre côté. C’est un échange qui se fait rapidement, à peine quelques minutes. Chaque instant compte.
Skyler s’éloigne momentanément pour aller chercher ce dont il a besoin pour la suite. “Il se fraie un chemin parmi les caisses de médicaments – surtout des antidouleurs – vers le fond de la salle circulaire où se trouve une armoire, un peu en retrait. Il retient son souffle et tire le grand tiroir dont le métal usé frotte par à-coups, comme s’il se lamentait. Une douzaine de sphères restantes reposent sur leur coussinet, endormies, dans l’attente d’un hôte. Celles qui manquent sont déjà pleines de vie. Skyler prend note qu’il devra aller se réapprovisionner bientôt dans l’entrepôt du centre de soins.
La douce fraîcheur du verre transparent sur sa paume le fait sourire. C’est une victoire qui changera le cours de l’Histoire. Les résultats tangibles prendront encore du temps, mais l’accomplissement est là.
Il referme le tiroir en prenant soin de ne pas pousser brusquement afin de ne pas les abîmer. Elles sont précieuses, le fruit de plusieurs années de recherche et de discussions envenimées avec son mentor, le docteur Nazar."
Translation - English "Every breath is agony and the wait, unbearable. For a moment, the man seems to be free of his illness, but at the last second, he gasps in a large gulp of air, as if he were about to drown.
Skyler monitors his patient's irregular vital signs closely.
The Fairies have been relentless with their victim this time. They are unpredictable, and especially cunning. They will now enrapture the man by luring him into their invisible realm. It's a one-way ticket. First, the Fairies induce dreams of a world where anything is possible, where the Flood never happened. The dreams are a little longer each time, and then the harrowing of hell begins.
There is no shame in being tempted. Even Skyler would like a second chance.
But fairies do not exist, of course.
The pungent stink of solvent wafting off the patient is Skyler’s cue to prepare the procedure. Everything must be ready before the man slips to the other side. It's a swift process, only a few minutes, and every second is crucial.
Skyler leaves the man momentarily to gather what he needs for the next step. He makes his way through cases of pharmaceuticals—mostly painkillers—to the back of the circular room, where sits a recessed cabinet. He holds his breath and drags open a large, heavy cabinet drawer, its worn metal screeching, where a dozen remaining spheres each lie on its cushion, asleep, waiting for a host. The missing spheres are already buzzing with life in the Archives. Skyler makes a mental note to hit up the warehouse of the medical bay soon and replenish his supply.
He smiles at the gentle coolness of transparent glass in his palm. This is a victory that will change the course of history.
He closes the drawer, taking care not to damage the remaining spheres. They are invaluable, the result of many years of research and heated debates with his mentor, Dr. Nazar."

I am a linguist who has been teaching foreign languages for over 10 years now (mainly English and French). I am Canadian and I was lucky enough to be brought up as a bilingual child, which means I can translate this language pair both ways. I have completed a 2-year formal training in translation at the University of Toronto.
I am a published author of science-fiction and fantasy which means whenever I have free time, I like to write and explore strange worlds. As of now, I have written and published four books in French, translated three books from French into English and I am now translating a book from English to French.
Since I write novels myself, I am interested in literary translation. Of course, I am open to other translation opportunities as well such as video games and the gaming industry, non-fiction books, etc.
I love travelling and languages. In fact, I am currently learning Chinese mandarin and although it is challenging, it helps me get a different perspective on language use and cultural differences which are crucial elements when it comes to translation. I also have a wide range of interests and I see every translation as an opportunity to learn something new.
I am an avid reader and read pretty much anything and also in different languages. I find it's the perfect way to keep those languages alive. Plus, I get to dive into a different world at the same time!
