You have been, or are suspected of having been, infected with HIV. This leaflet contains information regarding HIV, how it can be treated, and what you need to do.
What is HIV?
HIV is a virus that affects your immune system. Today, there are medications that, if taken correctly, reduce the viral load in the body and which allow a person with HIV to live a long and good life. If the medications are taken properly, the risk of infecting others with HIV is very low. HIV infection doesn’t heal, even with proper treatment the virus remains in the body. If an infected person does not receive treatment, the immune system eventually weakens and unusual infections or cancers can develop. This later condition is called AIDS. Most people living with HIV today will never develop AIDS.
