Source text - English When the pressure rises
For blood to flow from the heart and lungs throughout the body, it needs to be under pressure. Each time the heart beats, it sends blood all over the body through the circulatory system. As the heart contracts, the pressure in the arteries increases; as the heart relaxes between beats, the blood pressure decrease. A healthy blood pressure for a person at rest is at or below 120/80 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). It is when blood pressure increases beyond these levels, that high blood pressure or hypertension develops.
As we have moved from village to cities, from a slower to a faster pace of life, as we have prospered and started to ride on motorized bike and cars rather than walk, to eat more rather than less, to worry rather than trust in our creator, hypertension has increased dramatically.
Recent pooling of studies shows that hypertension is present in 25% urban and 10% rurals subjects in India. There are approximately 31.5 million hypertensives in rural and 34 million in urban India! These statistics are much higher than 20 years ago, showing that changes in lifestyles have taken their toll. In rural areas it is more common in men and in cities it is higher in women.

दिल और फेफड़ों से होकर पूरे शरीर में खून के प्रवाहित होने की क्रिया रक्तदाब के कारण होती है। हर बार जब दिल धड़कता है तो वह खून को रक्तप्रवाह तंत्र के द्वारा पूरे शरीर में संचालित करता है। जब दिल सिकुड़ता है तो नसों में दबाव घट जाता है और जैसे ही दिल दो बार के धड़कनों के बीच में सिकुड़ता है तो खून का दबाव घट जाता है। एक आदमी जो आराम से बैठा हुआ है उसके लिए यह जरूरी है कि रक्त का दबाव 120/80 मिली मीटर के नीचे हो। अगर इससे ज्यादा उसका रक्तचाप बढ़ता है तो उच्च रक्तचाप अथवा अतिरिक्त रक्तचाप बढ़ जाता है।
गाँव की कम भाग दौड़ की जिंदगी से शहर की ज्यादा भाग-दौड़ वाली जिंदगी में पर हमारे जीवन में बहुत तेजी आ जाती है और हमारा रहन-सहन का तरीका भी बदल जाता है। शहर में आकर हम थोड़ा धन कमा लेते है और इसके बाद मोटर साईकिल या कार की सवारी करते है तथा पैदल चलना हम भूल जाते है। हमारे भोजन में भी परिवर्तन हो जाता है और हम कम खाने की बजाय ज्यादा खाने लगते है। हम अपने प्रभु में विश्वास छोड़कर दुःख और चिन्तओं में डूब जाते है जिससे हमारा रक्तचाप अचानक बढ़ जाता है।
हाल फिलहाल के किए गए सर्वे के मुताबिक शहरों में रहने वाले 25 प्रतिशत लोगों और गाँव के 10 प्रतिशत निवासियों में यह बीमारी मौजूद है। लगभग 31.5 मिलियन उच्च रक्तचाप वाले लोग गाँवों में रहते हैं और 34 मिलियन उच्च रक्तचाप वाले शहरी भारत में निवास करते हैं। पिछले 20 वर्षों की तुलना यह आंकड़ा बहुत ज्यादा है और इस बात को साबित करता है कि हमारे जीने के तरीके में बदलाव ने हम पर कहर ढाया है। ग्रामीण भारत में बीमारी मर्दों में ज्यादा है जबकि शहरी क्षेत्रों में औरतों में।
