Source text - English A CONFLICT OVER GOALS
On August 23,1941, Colonel General Heinz Guderian of the 2nd Panzer Group left the Russian front and flew back to Germany on a singular mission. The panzer leader intended to confront the Fuhrer and try to persuade him to change his battle plan.
Hitler’s latest instruction ordered the congquest of no less than the entire Ukraine. The troops of Army Group Center – the forces that had taken smolenks on July 15 and been there ever since, waiting for the command to advance on Moscow- were to be deployed. A few would go north to join in the siege of Leningrad, but a vital of 14 divisions were to peel off for the south.
Almost to a man, the german generals in the fields believed that the Fuhrer’s orders to be a mistake. They wanted to move on and take Moskow, the focus of Russia’s military, political and industrial might, and the hubs of its road and railway networks.
This conflict between Hitler and his generals over objectives was not a new one; it had waxed and waned ever since the inception of the Russian campaign. In July, Hitler had restrained Army Group South from marching on Kiev- the capital of the very region he was now throwing so many of his forces against. In early August he had given Leningrad top priority. Now he was reversing himself again.
After so encouraging a beginning, the war was proving tougher and more costly in German lives dan equiptment than anyone had expected. By late August, German casualties numbered 440.000 with 94.000 dead. But victory still seemed possible. The Russian armies were reeling from the blow to Smolensk. The best way to exploit this situation, the German Generals believed, would be to head straight for Moscow. A detour to the south was something they could ill afford while the finest months of the year were slipping away. What was more, such a detour would hardly give them the time that they would need to regroup and attack Moscow before the cold weather set in – and the Russian winter was known to be fierce.
Translation - Indonesian PERDEBATAN TENTANG ARAH PERTEMPURAN
