Source text - English This piece, along with Dance, was commissioned by the Russian collector Sergei Ivanovich Shchukin in 1909. The two were to be allegories of music and dance, and Matisse worked hard to simplify them into their elemental forms. Whereas Dance appears to burst out of the canvas and pulsate with energy, Music is strangely static, almost like a subject for meditation. In conception and design, it is calm and perfectly balanced. The forms are primitive, largely featureless men stripped of clothes and genitalia. There is little to differentiate one from another because that was not Matisse’s intention; what concerned him was to arrive at a harmony of form so that the spectator viewed the composition as a whole. The three figures to the right sit, knees bent, looking back at us. They have been described as notes on a staff of music with the erect violinist representing a kind of treble clef. Whether this was Matisse’s intention is not know. He wrote of the painting that it ‘was composed with a fine blue for the sky, the bluest of blues. The surface was coloured to saturation, to the point where blue, the idea of absolute blue, was conclusively present. A bright green for the earth and vibrant vermilion for the bodies. With these three colours I had my harmony of light and also purity of tone.’
Translation - Romanian Împreună cu Dansul, această lucrare a fost comandată de colecţionarul de artă rus Serghei Shchukin în anul 1909. Cele două tablouri se doreau a fi nişte alegorii ale muzicii şi dansului, iar Matisse a lucrat din greu pentru a le simplifica până la obţinerea formelor lor elementare. În timp ce Dansul pare a se dezlănţui dincolo de limitele pânzei, vibrând de energie, Muzica este straniu de statică, asemuinându-se unui subiect de meditaţie. Din punct de vedere conceptual, lucrarea este liniştită, iar designul perfect echilibrat. Formele sunt primitive, bărbaţii cu trăsăturile mult simplificate nu au haine şi nici organe genitale. Pentru că prezintă foarte puţine elemente distincte, aceste personaje pot fi cu greu diferenţiate; nu aceasta a fost intenţia lui Matisse, pictorul fiind preocupat mai curând să ajungă la o armonie a formei, astfel încât spectatorul să privească această compoziţie ca pe un tot unitar.
Cele trei personaje din partea dreaptă stau aşezate, cu genunchiii îndoiţi şi cu faţa spre privitori. Aceste figuri au fost descrise ca asemuindu-se notelor de pe portativ, în timp ce violonistul ce stă în picioare pare a fi cheia sol. Nu se ştie dacă aceasta a fost într-adevăr intenţia lui Matisse. Artistul scria despre tablou că „pentru cer am ales un albastru pur, albastrul cel mai albastru.
