The AVE is not underground for most of its trajectory; many sections referred to as "soterrado" (=buried) actually pass through embankments or walled enclosures.
O sea, que no se trata de un tren "underground" sino tiene algunos tramos protegidos, o medio soterrados. Depende del contexto, puede resultar necesario exlicar este punto.

The only time the Madrid-Valencia AVE is actually "underground" is when it is in the tunnel at the entry to the terminals at either end. The rest of the time it is "embanked". I can see it from near my house, which I couldn't if it was under ground. QED.
