That is how you say it English. I grew up in the ocean, practically!
Sandspit is my favorite, actually, but my mom says 'sandbar' sounds nicer because it doesn't contain the word 'spit.'

I think sandspit may be more precise, because a sandbar [i think] could be partially separated from the mainland (although likely connected just below the water's surface).

I highly recommend sandspit.
