tickets and booking references

When you book an air ticket online, you are given what is called a "localizador" in Spanish, which is a sequence of about six letters or numbers, like for example ZX7YUVB or something, which you quote when checking in online, changing booking details, making enquiries, etc. In English I think it's usually called the booking reference (some airlines certainly call it that. The same goes for online bookings for museums (last time I went to Madrid to see an exhibition I booked in advance online and got a "localizador", which was again a booking reference). So I think that's what they're referring to. If you take a note of this reference then even if you don't have your actual ticket you can get a replacement.

HNY!

In the air travel context, at least, it can also be called a "record locator", and I think that's probably what the airlines tend to call them internally:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Record_locator

But in their public interface the airlines use "booking reference", which is much more straightforward and self-explanatory. Here's British Airways, for example. If you click on the little blue "i" beside "booking reference" you'll see they mean the record locator:

And in the Wikipedia page various other options are given:

"Not all airlines use the term record locator. Other terms in use include:
- Confirmation number
- Reservation number
- Confirmation code
- Booking reference
- Booking code"

Cheers, Eileen, and all the very best to you for 2016 :)
Note from asker:
Thank you Charles, I looked all over the Internet and could find nothing similar to locator and I NEVER buy by phone, which seems to be the method used for these booking references, from what I have read. My problem was finding the term in English. You rock <3 (Happy 2016).
