Spanish term

medias

Spanish to English Art/Literary Textiles / Clothing / Fashion Fashion journalism
Los profundos bordados y las delicadas plumas que recorren los cuerpos de los vestidos y las exquisitas medias de fantasía, nos trasladan a lugares lejanos llenos de matices y detalles de couturier.

From an article on Josep Font's new collection of haute couture dresses with a nautical theme. I know medias are stockings, but is that the case here? I doubt it, and am at a loss.
UK Eng, and thanks in advance.

Discussion

Carmen Schultz Jan 30, 2009:
Answerer specified it is for UK English I had mentioned 7 minutes into the posting that either pantihose(pantyhose) and hosiery would work but answerer said for UK English 'stockings' was the term she preferred. The caution here is that hosiery is all-encompassing thus is more of category that includes stockings and even socks (short socks not sexy as fantasy stockings or medias de fantasia as implied in the text in question). I don't know why M77 chose to repeat what had already been suggested earlier.
Marta 77 Jan 30, 2009:
Stockings is a restricted term A stocking, sometimes referred to as hose, is a close-fitting, variously elastic garment covering the foot and lower part of the leg.
Paul Adie (X) Jan 30, 2009:
Tights? I always thought 'medias' were tights. What is it with you and lingerie?!

Note from asker:
Don't worry about references for 'pantyhose' too much: as I state above, I am working into UK English. Thanks so much for your help! :)

hosiery

If you want to amke the term more general, "hosiery" includes all kinds of stocking, legging and tights. It's more precise when describing leggwear, for "stockings" is a close-fitting, variously elastic garment covering the foot and lower part of the leg.

Looking at some pictures of his latest collections, I understand your dilemma, Kate. I still think stockings would be the appropriate word to use.

Good luck, Kate.
