Discussion

Heidi C May 14, 2006:
your selection should depend on the complete context of your text to assure the reader will understand what you are talking about(that the text itself makes it clear to the reader that that is the meaning, which I assume it doesn't as you are asking here)
Marina Soldati May 14, 2006:
Dear Iyasu, "albiceleste" is not a nickname, it just refers to the colors of their T-shirt

Muchas gracias Marina!
neutral Monica Colangelo : you're in the right track, but this is not used, actually. It is indeed a nickname for Argentina's squad, though only used by sports commentators. No Argentine fan would refer to their team as the albicelestes.

Ukraine 0-0 Argentina: Albiceleste hang on -"This suited the Albiceleste who were happy to play on the counter using the space behind the East European defence."

Albiceleste mantle passes to Ferraro
Peer comment(s):

agree Monica Colangelo : absolutely, yes.

I think, here Fifa rules!
neutral Heidi C : if it does refer to the Argentine team (Iyasu has given no other context), I think it should either be translated as "the white and blue team" or "the Argentine team".The FIFA pg uses itallics and it's in a context that only refers to that team...

You are right regarding the lack of context, but if it referes to soccer, The Albiceleste is used around the world, from Australia to Bangladesh, as a quick Internet search shows. I think a note is needed the first time. The Argentine team is not the same
