Spanish term

menudo in the morning

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
this is a continuation of the previous question...

the young man leaves the bar, murmurs "buenas noches," and his friend says, "menudo in the morning."

(the young is having troubles lately, and drank quite a lot at the bar, while his friend, who's a bit older than him, tries to console him. the scene is the end of their conversation, when the young man is leaving)

i appreciate your explanation MargaEsther, it's been most helpful. i'm using footnotes to keep things as clear as possible, and i think i'll have to work things out with my editor as well...
Alan R King Jan 20, 2007:
I believe MargaEsther is right and obviously knows the background context much better than I do, so I have withdrawn my own comment, which was obviously wrong.

Margarita Gonzalez Jan 20, 2007:
your editors and (if possible) with the author might not be a bad idea, since the task of translating Chicano literature to Turkish is no doubt a formidable -but nevertheless exciting- task. (Sorry for the too general explanation, but the limited number

in Mexico -not unusual in the case of migrant cultures-, such as the 5 de Mayo being the most important civic festivity for Chicanos (as it was in the 19th century) and not the 15 & 16 of September as it is in Mexico. Perhaps keeping in close touch with

confronted by a pretty new language. And then you are translating traditions that derive from the Mexican culture but are transplanted in the USA. Some of these traditions have been preserved even better by the Mexican community in the USA, than by people

Although I try to avoid translator's footmarks in literature, I'd suggest the use of them for this novel. To begin with (in the introduction or such) somebody would have to explain that the original is in English AND Spanenglish, and what it means to be

menudo (in italics) see explanation

Menudo is a Mexican dish that has broth and meat... and is very spicy. It is said to be ideal for hangovers. Thus the friend is just reminding to have a bowl in the morning, to get over the hangover and things will look better. Menudo is similar to pozole (or potzole/potzoli), a pre-Hispanic dish. Although menudo in other countries would only refer to "small" (that is why the Menudo band chose that name, the kids were very young when they started), in this context there is no doubt it refers to the dish. It used to be a frequent advise, now there are smart drinks.

Thanks a million, Eva

Things don´t are not so bad when daylight comes.....

Menudo means small so I assume that this is the sense of the comment considering he is consoling the other guy.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Vocabulum (X) : Siento discrepar, pero en este caso, "menudo" tiene únicamente el sentido que explica MargaEsther. Saludos. :)
