p.s.:

it is the name of a wine, too

Only one of the many exciting, indigenous grape varieties in Portugal, Periquita means « little Parakeet ».

The wine is robust, rustic and full of southern charm

The wine is a Portuguese one:

Periquita means ‘Little Parrot’ which is the name of the farm where the Fonseca family started in 1934. This wine,
made from the Castelao Frances grape, is their flagship wine, and is very fruity, quite dry but with good berry flavours.

female budgie / budgerigar

The common name is "budgie" (the small green blue, yellow birds we often buy for our homes), but if the context is more formal, "budgerigar".
Peer comment(s):

agree Fernando Romero R : Yes, this SOUNDS better if the context reffers to a domestic bird

Girl

Depends on the context. In some areas in Spain, we can use it for girls. For example"
"mira esa periquita"
"look at that girl"

parakeet

Periquita simply means a parakeet but of course there are many varieties of parakeet, including the budgeregar which as an Australian one (usually called "periquita de amor". My reference for this is "A guide to the birds of Costa Rica" by Stiles and Skutch, which is highly regarded by birders (at least in Costa Rica)

agree sure2nox : My wife is called Perica because in Argentina it was the name of cartoon character called Nancy in the American newspaper cartoons. She always wanted her family to read the Perica cartoon to her. And is definitely not because she talks too much.

bitch / easy girl

In Spanish argot "Periquita" and "perica" is an old-fashioned euphemism for "prostitute". Similar to the word "pilingui".

"Ir de pericas" means to have sex with prostitutes in Spanish slang. Similar to "lumis" (sing. lumi)

Little by little the word started to be used as a synomym of "chica ligera de cascos" or "chica fácil" ("loose girl", "easy girl", "bitch") in Spanish slang.

"No vayas como un desesperado de PERICA en PERICA, o si lo haces procura que el resto no te vean. Nunca, bajo ningún concepto, le digas a una PERICA que buscas algo más, a veces se lo creen. No te hagas pasar por tierno y romántico, eres un seductor, un CAZA-PERICAS."
