Implica coma grado 4 (generalmente irreversible), que requiere asistencia mecánica respiratoria, aporte continuo de fluidos y alimentos, drogas inotrópicas, o todo ello, para mantener la vida.

Mosby's English equivalent of "vegetativo" is "vegetative". The same dictionary gives five meanings of the word, one of which coincides with Elena's answer:

: It refers to the second definition you have quoted, nothing to do with a vegetative state. Be careful with basing research on google hits, you will find that many many times people make the same mistakes, which, of course, does not make them right :)
